i am just a little worried because it's rainy season in rainy washington and i'd hate to ruin my motor. anyway, comptech claims that their design prevents hydrolock unlike the AEM CAI, but i don't see how. i see that the opening is facing forward instead of straight downward like the AEM's, but isn't it still possible for water to get in the opening and be sucked in? do you guys have any insight? TIA.

 

In order to hydro lock, you have to submerge the opening of the piping/filter a for the majority of it's opening. So you would have to drive through some really deep puddles. otherwise your fine.

 

Yeah your talking a massive amount of water to hydrolock your ****. A little water is always going to get in but you would have to emerse yourself in a pretty deep puddle like the dood said above. You'll be fine i wouldnt sweat it man.

 

It is possible (and has been done) but less likely than the AEM CAI.

I wouldnt worrie i used to drive my EG here in FL with an Iceman CAI in hurricanes,it takes alot of water to hydro-lock a motor so the "safe" advice is to never drive threw water that you dont know how deep it is.Your everyday rain puddle wont hurt ya.

 

Maybe you could take off the airhorn on the lower part of the ice box, or turn it upwards if you can,not sure though.might help a little. other than that what everyone else said you should be fine. My old SI has the icebox and drives in the NW rainy season and has been fine so farhow ,did you ever do a leakdown test?. let me know later.----RYAN

 

put on ur stock one just for the rainy season...you don't have to clean that expensive filter that much.

 

whenever it rained, i would remove the lower piece, because water would always get there.. its possible to hydrolock.. i was told to remove cover to reduce vacuum..

 

Get a beater if your that worried about hydrolocking so u dont have to drive in the rain

 

Don't drive through puddles either

 

I've driven through some crazy rain storms with the AEM CAI ... the kind that all of a sudden kind of flood the road ..... nothing to worry about

 

thanks guys for the replies. i haven't been able to get to a computer so on me. anyway, i guess there's nothing to worry about. i always avoid puddles anyway even though they are my favorite. also, if something does happen, i can go after comptech i suppose.

 

i haven't gotten a leakdown, but i really don't think it's necessary because i'm not burning much oil whatsoever. i swear i burn less than a 1/4 qt every 3000 miles. it pulls strong so i'm gonna wait until spring to put her back on the dyno and check over everything.

The water would have to enter behind the parking light w/enough force to get past the bends and then past the filter in the engine bay.

There was one member here on Honda-Tech that had this problem ~6 months after it came out. I believe that Comptech took care of everything, not sure how, or why, but that's what I remember.

I never had a problem when I had mine. I just got in the habit of taking my foot of the gas when a saw a larger puddle down the road. Oh course it isn't always that easy. Besides the openning sits protected behind the signal. It kinda gets you thinking though, esp. after that post with the guy who had the bend rod and toasted block, due to waterlog (speculation anyhow). I like the idea of removing the snap on cover.

 

man, if it rains just pop the top of the box cover off and your good to go. Pop the hood then pop the cover off the icebox, 1 min tops.

 

Nightrider, i agree, motor is strong and when i had her she never burned a drop of oil and was always golden. maybe well meet up at a spring meet or something. later.

that's like walking into the middle of Tikrit Iraq and saying President Bush is your friend.

even if you stamped a star on the opening of the intake and mistaken it for some religious or anarchist symbolism it wouldn't prevent Aqua, the wicked water god of the east, from doing damage in your voodoo transference protected engine under those circumstances.

just curious, how would popping off the top of the intake cover help preventing hydrolock?

 

Probably less pressure to bring up water through the cold air extension.

I wouldn't worry about it, unless you drive around flooded streets there shouldn't be any problems.

 

i dont think it will happen unless you drive through a swimming pool ! on my icebox tube there is a hole too ! i think water will just go out from there !! and also if there is a puddle deep enough to get water into filter i think water would be goint in from muffler too
