Default 15w50 full synthetic

Hey guys I'm currently on a budget due to FULL TIME STUDENT and my ITR needs oil change real bad. I have Mobil 1 full synthetic 15w50 sitting in my friends garage. You think my motor can get harmed by using 15w50 then switching back to 5w30 Mobil 1 full synthetic ASAP?

no harm you'll just notice a slow response.

You previously posted that you had a new motor going in, you should stick with the break in procedure. Get cheap normal oil for now and then when the time comes, switch to synthetic oil of your choice.

Please do not listen to this non-sense. Higher weight oil has a higher viscosity at startup. Simply put, roughly 90% of engine damage occurs on startup. Thinner oil has better lubricating properties, it transfers heat more effectively. I'm a college student paying my way through college, so I know your position. However, this is an item you cannot cheap out on. eat beans and rice for a week, that will make up the difference. Kinda sets the tone for this a quote; "The bitterness of poor quality is remembered long after the sweetness of low price has faded from memory." -Aldo Gucci

15w-50 for 5+ years with no issues. It won't hurt anything, but unless you're tracking quite a bit in high heat, there's no real need.

If you ran it where it was actually cold I'd advise you to bite the bullet and buy the lighter-weight oil. However, I highly doubt that in SoCal it's going to make a significant difference.

What will certainly help, in any case, is to supplement your oil with Zinc, as most oils currently lack enough of it, and it helps in engines using flat-tappet cams. STP oil treatment is good for it.

The Mobil 1 15W-50 does have higher Zinc levels. Not as much as say Valvoline VR-1 or Shell Rotella Synthetic, but it's better than most OTS oils. That viscosity is for race motors tho.

you will do just fine. i wouldn't run it during cold winter... although.. thicker oil = more fuel.. so you'll end up paying the difference in gas.. want fuel economy, run 5w30.

it will definatly affect fuel economy. just do what you can but since it is a new motor you have to be careful during the break in period
