would missing a knock sensor effect emissions?
yes it can, the knock sensor detects pings in the combustion chamber and backs off the timing until the ping'ing stops
so if your timing is too far advanced and your knock sensor is not working or missing it can affect the emission out of the tail pipe

Yes. Knocking can damage your engine.
In most states (especially for OBDII), you would automatically fail emissions because you would have a stored CEL for the faulty sensor.

sorry to hi-jack your thread. Here is my problem; thanks for any input/help.
I have a 97 obd2 GSR motor in my 95 hatch; I ran the motor with JDM and USDM obd2 p72 ECU without getting any check engine light.
When I use an USDM OBD1 p72 ECU I get code 23, which could be knock sensor, ECU or an open wire circuit.
I have read on here from other posts saying, "Blah blah blach...most of the time the problem is the knock sensor". Common sense dictate that the USDM OBD1 p72 ECU is messed up, but according to this post: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1853426 the problem is not the ecu. What you're gays and gals opinion on my situation?
