When do distributors normally break?
So my drama with my relocation company continues...I recently had my car shipped from St. Louis to San Jose. The relocation company loaded a perfectly functioning Integra on to their truck and drove off. Ten days later I received an integra that would not start, with a dead battery, a loose bumper with 3 paint chips on it.
They told me that when they arrived in Sacramento and tried to move the car it would not start so the truck driver drained the battery trying to crank it. Turns out, at least according to the tech at the Acura dealer, that it was the front dead center sensor in the distributor that was hosed. This turned out to be something like $1000 for parts and labor. My knowledge of how distributors work is limited and I would like to be able to talk to the claims person intelligently about it because I know they are going to try to deny responsibility. I understand they control when the spark is delivered, but I don't understand how it could spontaneously break sitting on a transport truck. I could use some help figuring out a position to take on why this is not a normal way for a distributor to go out from a technical stand point. Or if someone can explain why this might be my fault I would be interested too.
Thanks

i think they took your good distributor, bumper, battery and swapped it for fucked up ones. i say you file a claim. that's fucked up.
yeah man they did somthing to your ride dizzys dont just go out like that there is usually a slow deteriation and if anything it would be a cap or rotor problem...which is not a hard fix and should be under 200 bones ....the type of problem they are describing about the front sensor would not be caused from them trying to crank it...I think there is somth8ing fishy about the reloaction company...
I had a similar problem with my car and a tow company....Give those ******** some hell!!

I've had two distrubutors go out at around 90,000 miles. I'm not sure what the usual life is for them, however you noted that it was a sensor. $1000 labor is what I would charge to remove and install an engine, not a sensor. Something is definately fucked up here.
Here is the diagnosis:
"Tech checked complaint and found bad battery needs to replace battery first then recheck. Replaced battery was running (I guess he means there was electricity) found two ECM codes 2-1/3 VTEC and map. Continued to check and found no spark found bad distributer. Replaced distributer housing and cap with rotor."
$637.84 in parts including new battery
$375.00 in labor
It took them 13 working days to complete this at an Acura dealer no less.
