VTec on a 2000 GS-R.....
So I've got the B18C1 in the GSR, the engine that came in it, obviously, and I checked the valve to see if it's got vacuum below 6k and it does and it engages at 6k but when I'm driving, I can barely feel or notice VTec. It may be because I've been driving my brothers 2000 Type R and when Vtec kicks on that it pulls like a ****, but is it normal to not really be able to tell that it's engaging or not feel a real change?
When my brother drove it he thought it wasn't engaging at all because you can't hear or feel it, but the valve is engaging because we checked all the moving parts at different RPM's.
Any input?

Do you have the stock intake/header/exhaust ? VTEC is intended to be a smooth transition, and should not necessarily make a loud noise or a noticable jump in power ... that being said, aftermarket i/h/e will generally make it more distinguishable

In addition, there are some other factors which affect whether VTEC will engage or not, for example the engine must be at a safe operating temperature ... make sure the car is properly warmed up before you jump to any conclusions

We checked the valve that opens the short path at 6000 to reduce air resistance and it was working.
I assume it's the stock intake header and exhaust, it looks like it, and sounds like it. I just bought the car yesterday. Got a pretty good deal on it. I'll post some pictures.

iThere's no problem with it at all.
You can't hear VTEC engage at all if you're stock; you've gotta have at least I/IM/H/E to kind of hear it.
As for the secondaries opening up, you should def. be able to hear that, but once you get an aftermarket IM that is eliminated, as I've never seen any aftermarket intake mani's with the butterfly.

i have an 00 gsr as well. but from what i have been told and read gsr's are known for having a very smooth cross over as well as not being able to hear vtec near as much as like an Si. I have an aem sri, and apexi cat back and i can def. notice it and hear it way more than stock.

thats why yours kicks in "good" because you have an intake with no resonator like the stock intake.

this is my brother's old dyno of his gsr with cai and exhaust:
look at how smooth it is. you'd be hard pressed to find the vtec x-over just by looking at it. vtec should never be felt. if it is, it's at the wrong point.
and just a little clarification of some things said in this thread. there is only one stage of vtec and it's at 4400rpm @ WOT. the intake secondary's are NOT part of the vtec system and open at 5750-5800.

the intake manifold on the GSR has two sets of runners, long and short... these smooth out the torque curve. type-r doesn't have two sets of runners, just one, thats why you feel vtec kick in harder on ITR or GSR with aftermarket IM. if you wanna hear it a bit louder, take off your resonator (or the whole intake box)
