Default Vtec..

So i went to my honda wreckers and asked about a vtec head..
i wanna do a b18a1 vtec conversion.. to my 89 integra.
i asked what vtec heads he has, cause as far as i know there are three types?

he said they are all the same.. b16, b18..
i wanna know about the gsr and itr and b16 heads...

is the b18 a gsr head?
the wreckers dude said it wasn't..

some information please.. i want to know.. how do i tell what the head is... does it say vtec or something on it?

not to be a dick, but based on your lack of knowledge, i would recommend skipping going to the salvage yard and you doing this yourself, and go to a local reputable shop and see what they can do for you. do it once and do it right

as for the head b16 = pr3, b18c1 = p72, b18a = pr4...b16 head is cast the same as a b18c5 minus the factory port and polish, dual springs and retainers, and more aggressive cams...so IN MY OPINION the bext head to get is a b16a head...although you can argue all day whether a b18c1 or b16a head are better

Then tell the jackass you want a b18c5 head.. And your gonna pay the price of the b16... cuz he "claims they are all the same.

i only get 5 posts a day, so ill try and get it all out lol..

i live in australia.. honda parts are really REALLY expensive here, its quite hard to find honda parts..
we dont have many high preformance honda shops or anything.. its going to be hard for me to build a LS vtec..
but im going to try buy a few things now and later.. and just build my knowledge abit more.

i am not going to build this asap.. i am just gathering information. then i will start buying a few things at a time..
i want the right head.. if its a b18 vtec head i need to buy or what ? i dont quite know the differences, i wouldn't know how to compare the differences naw would i know if i am being ripped off..
this guy told me he will sell me a VTEC head B18 for $650 Australian dollers.

Add me to msn, if you can help me out with some questions..

b18 a1/b1 are not vtec, b18 c1/c5 are

b16 = pr3, b18c1 = p72, b18a = pr4

So, What is or is not right here.

so do i want a b18c5 or do i want a b16 head now?
I take it these are both vtec.. i hope people are giving the right information.

if i was to buy a head.. i would then just need to buy a vtec conversion kit.. bearing/pistons/gaskets (the essentials)..

i would have to machine the head?
i would have to bore or sleeve the block?

Some slight steps on the process would help..
i have read the long process of how to do it.. but could some one just basicly tell me.. if this is correct.

take engine out.. remove old head..
machine block..
bore/sleeve block..
install new head with all the new pistons and stuff.
balance something..

sounds about right?

I forget what kind of car a b16 comes out of
B18a/b = ls/gs (a or b depends on year of car)
B18c1 = GSR
b18c5 = Integra Type R

You could do that work as an option, but you don't have to. There is lots of info here you can look through.

if they all cost the same price get the type r (b18c5) head, also make sure to

build your block stock crankshaft should be fine but i woud definately think about

getting forged rods and pistons because the stock ls rods and pistons were not

designed to rev that high, also your going to need the ecu that matches

your head, the golden eagle ls/vtec conversion lines i here make things alot

simpilar, and an intake manifold that matches your head of choice. good luck with

your project.

also i forgot :

get the water pump, oil pump, and timing belt that matches your head, head studs, and a b18a1/b1 head gasket... i might of forgot a few things but trust me its the little things that matter when doing an ls/vtec and if its built right it will be as reliable as anyother honda motor

The stock pistons and stock rods of the LS will be fine...replace the stretched out rod bolts with ARP's...

Just a few helpful hints:

Go with an ITR or gsr water and oil pumps, for the timing belt you need to use either the ITR or GSR belt depending on which water pump you go with. The b16 timing belt will be too short for the ls/vtec conversion. For the head studs use the ITR/GSR head studs because the B16 head studs will also be too short and can eventually strip out once mated to the block. Your ok with the b18a/b head gasket but you dowl pins to align the head will be relocated to the other side of the block so your best off with getting the Golden Eagle Ls/vtec conversion kit which will come with alot of the parts that you will need. Have a machine shop weld the oil port shut on the vtec head and have it resurfaced (recommended). You will also want to beef up your rod bolts so invest in a set of ARP rod bolts if using your stock rods. When running the oil supply to the head use the Endyn method to where you will run a line from your oil pressure sensor port to the firewall into a brass T that has been secured to the firewall then up to the head, this way nothing snaps off and you end up with oil everywhere!
