Timing problem 91 Integra
I aimed my timing light at my cam sprockets after putting white marks on the "up" spokes and find that it jumps 90 degrees a few times and after a several cranks it has no spark at all. When the white mark is on the top the motor tries to start but then timing changes again. I've been trying to get it started for some time now. This happens with or without the jumper on the grey connector. This all started when the motor died on me and I got towed home. I thought perhaps the timing belt jumped a notch because it backfired before it died. I put my timing light on it to see and it seemed to be ok, but I'm starting to wonder if I had let it crank enough to get these wierd results. The ecu showed codes for fuel problem and oxygen sensor after I got it towed home.
I have 40 pounds fuel pressure at the rail. Spark at all plugs. 180 pounds compression. When I spray carb cleaner into the intake it trys to fire and then backfires.
Can a crank position sensor do this? Any ideas?

Normally yes. Origionally I thought it jumped a notch on the timing belt. When I checked timing on the crank it looked ok. But the backfiring seemed to indicate otherwise. I pulled off the timing covers (after making the tool to hold the crank still while removing the pully bolt) to see if it jumped the exhaust cam only??? I mean I was really desparate . I had to leave the project for a while. when I got back I thought mabey I put the belt back on 180 degrees (cam) out. Only way I could check w/o putting the crank pulley back on was to use the starter and compression gage to see if if fired at the end of the compression stroke. It seemed to be doing that but it is difficult to be positive on these counter clockwise engines without torqueing down the crank bolt (at least for me) so you can use it to turn the crank slowly. So I put the marks on the cam sprockets to see if #1 fired any where near TDC. Got the results I said in the origional post.

You were really close. Turns out all it was the rotor came off. It was in there freewheeling around. The set screw is actually missing. (wasn't me who put it on). I think I'll use locktight on these. Any ideas as to the screw size or where to get one?
