Default thoughts on flywheel changes??????????

I have read up and learned about flywheels and how the relate to spin down time of the engine as well as the ability of the car to coast smoothly once off the gas. Now, what im wanting to know, without so much a brand preferance sound off, is just how bad some of these side effects of a light weight flywheel are in real world driving on our type of cars.

Also, is this a mod worth considering when going for a street-turbo setup? I have just purchased a replacement LS motor and while its out im considering a few things.

Comments both positive and negitve are welcome.

Its up to you, I have a toda flywheel, yes it doesnt coast as good, i let off the gas, it slows down faster, revs drop quicker, etc. Not ment for drag racing, or droping the clutch at all. U wont get far, heh. Heavy flywheel is good for that because the inertia is has from spinning, while the light weight one has less. Im happy with mine, if that helps. ohh ya, SEARCH !

As mentioned, it's a trade-off. You will definitely get the revs down faster, but at the same time, the revs will go up faster as well. I tried the clutchmasters on a B18C1 and let's just say I'm replacing my "heavy" ITR flywheel in favor of the lighter CM unit. And contrary to what some people say, it's definitely streetable.

I agree with Alf. I have the CM and it's completely streetable. Not even noticable to me on take of. but there is definately a big difference in revving and slow down.

But every person is different. My suggestion is to find a person who has a light flywheel (and will let you drive) and cruise around in traffic (most annoying) and see if you like the way if feels.

If I am correct, the CM unit is either 7 or 7.5 lbs. which i think is around 10lbs. lighter than stock. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

Bottom line...I love the light flywheel. And to put it simply...if you don't mind shifting gears all day long, then you won't be bothered by learning the feel of a much lighter flywheel. Payoff in the end is nice.

i run a CM on my b18c CRX...i personally have encounter a slight problem with a light fly...when the revs fall SOMETIMES it bogs and has died on me on occasion...usually when im slowing down to the curb of my driveway...it looses momentum since it is much lighter than stock...there for you get the bogging...

that's when you either downshift or push the clutch in. come on... car bogs, you either give it gas or you push the clutch in, it's what happens with a stick shift.

I have a Fidanza flywheel (same as CM except for color) And i love it. I find it great for freeway traffic, goes from 80mph to 40mph and stays theree, then back up etc... Don't have to downshift much. I definatly notice an increase in acceleration in 2nd and 3rd gear.

I plan on doing a nice street turbo, making roughly 380 hp or whatever is needed for mid 12s on street tires. I have been told that light flywheels are bad for turbs because when you let off the gas it will fall out of boost. I made up for this with a short shifter (this is nice, contrairy to popular belief in that i have never scratched a gear etc). If i shift at 7k from 2nd to third, it'll goto about 4800, if that will fall out of boost for you, just tap the gas between shifts, or keep your foot on the gas while pushing in the cluthc and when you are about to put it in gear, let off the gas.

I love my light weight flywheel and ACT clutch, without a doubt the best mod on my car (next to the azenis )
