Default Starting problems..

Hey H.T.

My car is having some issues starting sometimes.More so when it rains(i think anyways),but i crank the motor and have to hold the gas until it "builds up" and comes to life.the cranks needed are random,as is the starting issue.sometimes it just fires right up no problem....what do you guys think the deal is?

note* sometimes it starts off so rough that it just sounds like its running on 1-2 cylinders for a few seconds, and then the rest fire off or something and the car runs/drives fine no issues at all..daily driver.

check the condition of your ignition system: cap, rotor, ignition wires, and spark plugs. Check for electrical arcing from your ignition wires while the engine is running.

install a fuel pressure gauge. observe pressure while the problem occurs

MM&Y of car would help.

Any mods to the engine would also help.

As mentioned I would want to know what the fuel pressure is when you are haveing the starting problem.

When was the last time the fuel filter was changed?

Also as mentioned, check the ign. system, do you have spark, [at all cylinders] when starting is a problem.

How old are the spark plugs, spark plug leads, cap, rotor, coil, ICM?

When was the last time a full tune up was done on the car? 94

i have been thinking my fuel pump is going bad for a long time.

91 Integra Ls(b18a1)
race rings
race rod bearings
b18b1 valvetrain and cams
Fuel management unit
headers + full catback exhaust
air intake
I just hit 700 miles on the new build.

I have not changed the fuel filter since i have owned the car..
same with spark plugs and wires..and the plugs look like S#!T..
the distributor however is fairly new,i just got it a few months ago and only have about 200 miles on it..The car starts every time,it just takes either opening the throttle while cranking,or sometimes priming my pump a few times before starting seems to help(i could be delusional, lol)
Ive done 3 oil changes on the build so far,new oil filter..

If you need any more info just ask, thanks for the help

ALSO!today,i went to start my car to go home after work and there were NO DASH LIGHTS at all!then when i went to crank it the dash lights came on and it cranked and started normally, then right when it was about to idle,it just died. Then i started it up again and it fired right up and idled and drove home just fine...?????what the heck?im always worried when its not going to start again..I'd hate to not be able to get to/from work, let alone not be able to drive my car...
On really rough starts,it will VERY SLOWLY come to life while i hold the gas pedal and crank..like its running on 1 cyl and then 2 cyl and then finally fires the motor to life..like its not getting enough gas to fire maybe..im not sure..

It's sort of sounding like you may have a bad ignition electrical switch. You can remove the trim panels surrounding the ignition switch with three philips screws on the lower panel. Then you can probe the solder joints on the switch (it will be on the left side) to see if you are getting power at different positions of the ignition key. Do a search for ignition switch testing for details.

I agree with grjr I would definatly look into the ign. switch...

http://www.visualimpressions.ca/switch/

http://techauto.awardspace.com/ignitionswitch.html

I would also check/redo your main grounds, [batt. cable clamp, batt. post, batt. to chassis and chassis to engine grounds] disconnect, clean both contact surfaces, reconnect.

Also make sure the grounds at the thermostat housing are good, disconnect/clean/reconnect.

"I have not changed the fuel filter since i have owned the car"

How long ago was that, and do you know how long before you got the car was it done? 94

hey sorry i havent been on here for a while.

lol That's crazy, you two were spot on!nice job!

it was indeed the ignition switch.it crapped out on me today and now i click the key to 2 and no dash lights.i can wiggle the key from 1 to 2 and 2 to 3 and get the dash lights to come on for a sec..i click it to start it and dash lights come on,car starts, then dies as soon as i let go of the key.i can even hold the key at 3(start) and it doesnt grind the starter and runs as if nothing is wrong at all.

my question is:
autozone and oreilly's sell these ******* for 260 a pop here, and that includes the lock cylinder and wiring..
do i need the lock cylinder, the wiring?or what exactly do i need?the entire thing?im really getting raped of $260?lol..

You can find new OEM ones for under $60 and aftermarkets for less...

Here are some at Parts Geek... http://www.partsgeek.com/catalog/199...on_switch.html 94
