i rented a spring compressor from pep boys b4.. it was the type where you have "U" hooks that go around the spring coils and nuts that secure the U hooks to the spring compressor clamps then u tighten it down... this is what I usually use to do spring/shock installs on me and my friends honda/acuras...

the clamp on the autozone compressor is kind of thick and the spacing between the coils on the spring isnt that much.. so I didn't use it because it wasnt my car and I didn't want to scratch calaveras springs by forcing the clamp into the coils.. not sure maybe if you don't mind a few scratches it might work.. but since it wasnt my car and wasnt my springs.. I didn't want to mess things up or scratch anything... and I didn't want to force it in or anything..

hmm pep boys in So Cali (near Glendale) told me rental is for one week.. however when I went to the check out I inspected the kit and it was missing some parts (retaining nuts for the U clamp).. I told them about it and they said they didn't have any more loaner tools/spring compressors in stock.. they said it was $50 for 7 days and if u don't return it after that they consider that you bought it...
I guess their employees don't check when u return the loaner tools..

so before you go to check out and have your suspension all apart.. make sure ALL the parts are in the box... the "U" hook type should have 4 hooks, 8 retaining nuts (to screw on the U hooks), 2 large bolts w/ 2 spring compressor clamps on each bolt....

YES it will work, it's what I used when installing my Konis and H&R springs. However it is somewhat of a pain to use because of the thickness of the clamps, but it IS possible (this is for stock springs, they probably can't be used on progressive rate springs).
