Default Shifting problem

I looked around the forum but all topics had different answers. So here is my dilemma.

Yesterday... sometime in the afternoon, my clutch started feeling a little funky. The car would start rolling without having to let the clutch pedal go much at all. The pedal felt funky too. Felt a little loose.

Today I get in my car and the car does not want to shift when its on. Like yesterday, the car will start rolling without having to let the pedal go much at all. Sometimes it even starts rolling when the pedal is all the way down. Everything is fine when the car is off though. Tranny and clutch seemed to be in really good condition and there was no grinds or any problems.

I am a complete newbie at this stuff. I have only done a minimal amount of engine work. No transmission experience. I don't have ANY cash right now for a mechanic. So can I get some step by step help to diagnose and fix the issue here?

First thing we need to know:

What year is the car? We need to know whether it's equipped with a cable actuated clutch, or a hydraulically actuated clutch.

First: Check the master cylinder to make sure that there is plenty of fluid.

Second: Check the master cylinder, the slave cylinder and the line between the two for leaks.

Is there any diagrams/photos on where to find the MS and the SC? I see something right on the transmission, but I am not sure if its the CMS or CSC. Like I said I don't know anything about this stuff. All help appreciated. I haven't found any useful pics yet..

The master cylinder is on the firewall and a small fluid reservoir attaches to it with a hose. The slave cylinder is on the front of the transmission, should have a rubber boot over part of it,and has a hard line coming out of it that in turn connects to a rubber line that's attached to the frame. There's a hard line that runs across the firewall and up the passenger side frame that connects the master cylinder to the aforementioned rubber line.

your problem happened to me last week. Pretty much out of the blue it was like the clutch didn't work. I would be rolling with the clutch all the way engaged, and i had a real hard problem in between gears.

I noticed i had a small leak in the CMC when i was checking the clutch push rod. So i ordered a pressure plate and flywheel, throwout bearing and clutch disk, needed to anyway and what better time than now. and in the mean time adjusted the pushrod so i could get all the throw i could from the clutch peadle. That seemed to help quite a bit, i still had problems but that might get you somewhere.

After i got everything on the car i had no problems. Upon inspection of the stock parts that came off i noticed that i didn't have much clutch disk left and there was some abnormal wear on the inside of the clutch disk. Pressure plate had normal finger wear, and didn't look too beat up. Hope some of that helped.

Well.. it kind of confused me actually. I am not aware with all those parts :D

Engine was quite greasy. Took some degreased and degreased everything to my best abilities. I found both the CMS and CSC. Seems like there is no leaks. I checked the fluid and it seemed really low in the reservoir. There was no indicators on min/max though. How much should I fill it up? Also I use either dot 3 or dot 4 brake fluid, right?
