Default Redline MTL review

I just got finished dropping some new MTL into my 98 RS. My Teggy was a bit overdue - I did this at 51k miles. All I can say is WOW! what a difference! The shifting is much smoother and easier, especially getting into first and reverse from a stop. The car seems a touch quieter; maybe it's the power of suggestion. It seems like some of the mechanical mutterings have been muted, though.

"Installing" the new fluid was pretty easy. I just jacked up the car, yanked the drain plug and was off. Getting the new fluid in was a bit tricky. You'll definitely want a hose to get to the fill hole. Even so, there was some slop. Let's just say that shop towels are a worthy investment, too. Thank God I had some extra.

All in all I give this product out of . It's worth the cash and time!

I recently switched from Redline MTL to Honda MTF. I've used Valvoline Synthetic Blend 10W-30 in the tranny before and it was nothing but grinding and gear blocking. That lasted a week before getting the Redline, which was a vast improvement over stock (whatever they put in there), and the motor oil.

The Honda MTF feels roughly the same as teh Redline MTL. Although, the gears do seem a bit notchier sometimes...but that might be the new clutch/FW's influence too. Saved me the extra $9.

I know this is a dumb question, but where do you add the fluid. Is it that spickot with the black rubber cap on top or is there just a bolt that you have to take out. Thanks

there is a bolt that you take out. its above the drain plug for the tranny. you fill it till it starts coming out and then thats it.

i've been looking at redline mtl, but i can't seems to fine it at pepboys, autozone, kragans. so the questions is where can u get redline mtl and how much does it cost? I change my TF w/ honda mtf and 5k miles later the shifing is a lil bit harder. A lil more effort has to be put in while shifting. SO i just wanna see if the redline stuff will rid that prob.

If you can't find Redline or don't want to have to wait for it to ship, try mobil 1 10W-40 in your GS-R. I have it in my tranny now and it certainly smoothed things out with no bad effects.

I had to mail order mine. I got it from a seller who will NOT be named here. Why? Because I don't recommend them. They took their sweet time getting the oil to me - hell, they had my CC# for a week before they even charged it. No confirmation e-mail, nothing.

Take a look at Redline's site - mebbe you have a local dealer who carries it. http://www.redlineoil.com/

FWIW, I tried the local Pep Boys, Auto Zones, etc. Don't bother, none of 'em have it.

Well, I prefer it, but remember that my Honda MTF was 21k past it's given service life.

So I guess none of you waited 115K miles then huh?? Well when I finally changed mine it did make a difference, probably the biggest one was being able to chirp 2nd, even with a dieing clutch.

Interesting, I thought the clutch engagement was smoother, but chalked it up to imagination.

Also, I thought the steering felt looser- again, might be my imagination. The differential should be operating more smoothly with new MTF, right?

ok, i can see i have let something very little yet important go way to look. IM approaching 130K and havn't changed it. Put that on the need to do do list by this weekend. Well, good news; I was worried that my syncros were going out and the tranny was just havning problems shifting but i am optimistic now...will keep ya updated.

http://www.se-r.net/car_info/engine_...ce_tuning.html
I know i know nissan but this site has some good information on oils not to mention many other topics. This guy is well known in the se-r community for knowing his stuff.

Thanks for the info sloth.
I chose honda mtf for its additives and shock absorbtion. As for racing motocross most of the people i know including me swear on honda oils more so than any other brand. I've noticed fewer engine rebuilds while racing with their oil over brands like motul, although it is a slightly different arena for daily driven cars.

Last time I went to a domestic Mustang place in Garland to get a few quarts. Call around to see who can get it locally b/c fluids can be expensive to ship.

Smoother shifting, probably longer-living tranny, and maybe 1-2 HP gained from less friction in the drivetrain

$7.99? Where the hell you live? Most auto part stores like Kragen, Pepboy, Autozone have it for like $5. If you can't find it, go to Target or kmart, $5 also.
