quick shifting question
When you guys are racing quarter mile.....and ur shifting gears, like from 1st to 2nd, or from 2nd to 3rd....do u guys let go of the gas? or do u guys have it floored the whole time and jus press the clutch n switch gears...?
You can leave the gas pedal down, its called power shifting. Its not good for your tranny but it might lower ur time slightly, so if you have money on a race I say do it but if you racing for fun, let off the gas.
I let go of the gas slightly when I race. I also only tap the clutch a little bit just to take the load off.
There is a program(im pretty sure hondata) out there that lets you do full throttle shifts. What it does is that when it detects the clutch is down and youre redlining, it drops the rpm down to about 6000rpm(different for different cars). so you dont kill the tranny.

That program sounds pretty good..........any ideas how much it is?
But having your car floored while shifting wouldnt hurt that much right because the rev limiter won't let you over rev right......am i right? or was that a dumb statement

Its not worth it. Unless you like replacing trannies. The difference it makes isn't worth **** anyway.....unless your a hardcore racer with trannies lined up in the garage.

Also, when you push in the clutch and keep your foot on the gas, the load on the engine is so strong that it'll overcome the rev limiter with ease. I've done it before just missing a shift (I had a built head that could rev up to 11 so it didn't do ****, but if I was stock and I hit 11k rpms I could have caused some damage).

i dont believe you are right on that one. think of a two step... pedal is too the floor but it keeps bouncing off the rev limiter. and if that is not right then take an rsx, it has a rev limiter at 6500 rpms i believe and if you floor it it wont go past 6500. like i said before mis shifting is a lot different. since the wheels are moving its gonna force the motor to turn over insane rpms. try rolling your car down a hill with the car in gear and the ignition turned to accesories, then drop the clutch and see what happens. the motor turns over and starts unless your car is really fucked up

the correct way of shifting is to take your foot completely off the gas, engage the clutch, shift to the desired gear, release the clutch, apply pressure to the gas pedal, im sure this sounds very choppy, but i meant what the hell, shift how you normally shift, just faster, dont leave your foot on the gas
heres a story for you all.... my friend is thinking about buying a newer civic ex, or si... but he doesnt think he can drive a stick.. so i take him out to some industrials and say he can drive... he gets first gear ok, a lil, choppy but ok, the rpms are at about 4k and i tell him to shift to second... he uses NO clutch and just pull it straight from 1st to second... umm its didnt work and then he stalled and i beat the hell out of him... just thought you all might enjoy that

mis shifting, "overcoming" the rev limit, and the rev limit are all EXTREMELY separate things....
when u misshift, say 3rd to 2nd, its not that the car revs 10k or whatever... its that the wheel are turning the motor over in that gear that fast.... essentially, its like bumpstarting your car...only rolling it down a mountain and dumping it in first.... .

Umm when the clutch is disengaged there is NO load on the engine, and the engine will not go past the rev limiter. It's like revving the engine in neutral.
Here is what happens when you powershift:
Wind out first gear, engine spinning ~8K rpm. Normally you would disengage the clutch, at which point the revs start falling, you shift, and by the time you engage the clutch again the revs are around ~5500 rpm (hopefully).
If you hold the throttle open when shifting, the engine will bounce the rev limiter while the clutch is disengaged. You will probably grind going into the next gear, but worse than that, the engine is still around 8K rpm when you engage the clutch in 2nd gear. Well, the speed at redline in 1st is obviously not the same as the speed at redline in 2nd. Well now you're in 2nd gear, travelling about the same speed as when you were at redline in 1st, but the engine is still at redline. Something doesn't add up, and something's got to give. What ends up giving is the clutch, as it ssslllliiipppsssss to bring the engine speed back down to match the road speed in 2nd gear, which is around 5500-6000 rpm.
Believe me people when I say don't do it. I speak from experience. I tried it at the drag strip in my old car and it totally destroyed the synchros and probably put ALOT more wear on the clutch than was necessary.

but to think if your shifting that slow where your gonna see the rpm climb while holding the gas and shifting,i think learning how to shift faster in general will help u more than power shifting..ive power shifted before ,but the shift are so quick that idebe suprised if it climbed any more than 2-300 rpm..but no its not good and even worse if u cant shift fast..

what you wanna do, is KICK your left foot, as fast as you can, and shift at the exact same time, it's all timing. at the same time for a split second ease off the throttle, ease don't completely let off, basically you can drop a little but should still be above the rpm you'll be landing in, then sleeeep the clutch from about 1000-1500rpms above your landing spot, which you should know
it's ALL feel,
if I do the kick/shift fast enough going into 2nd gear i chirp the tires good, on a stock LS with just bolt-ons.

you only chirp cause u hammer out the clutch, and the weight of your 103247235097 lb flywheel doesnt allow the rpms to drop, and its like trying to do a burn out
edit: and ur clutch doesnt suck... thats all the chirp means. only 2nd? cmon i can get 4th.
