Default Question about starter

It seems like my starter spinning/whirring/rapidly.....not clicking...somehow the gear isn't being pushed out? What could be the cause? This starter spins but seems like the gears isn't catching on to start the car. If anyone knows any ideas let me know..how if there's anyway to get the the actual gear to push out and meet with the flywheel teeth? Ive taken the starter to AutoZone and they checked it...they said it worked. yes it spins but does the gear do what it's suppose to?..I'm not sure and I don't trust the bench testing because I've tested a separate starter before and it didn't work when installed in car. Most likely I'll have to purchase a new starter but can't figure y something like this goes out.

Get a rebiuilt one cost 50$ with your old one in exchange. I feel you if you might be low on money, but better than guessing. I got mine for 46$.looks new ..how long ago since replaced? oh and i don't believe you can make it spin the opposite direction.

Actually it's not the starter because I put in a known working starter and same results.

Has anyone come up with a solution to this problem yet. My car is now reserved to Fred Flintstone startoffs so I know someone has to be knowledgable about a solution to this problem! It's a forum with probably over 100,000 members now, SOMEBODY HELP!

How do you know its your starter, any tricks to starting your car?
Are you sure its the starter or the gear it syncs with in the engine?

The Bendix of the starter is bad. You'll need to get another starter.

Actually it's not my starter. I tried a known working starter and same thing. Car won't start. Tried good starter and distributors. This sucks. I only barrowed the distributor and now it's dead and it's cold enough where you don't really want to tear the dang car apart. I'm gonna try the ecu just in case that's the prob. Any suggestions anyone? thanks so far

Its not the ECU.

Take your starter and get it tested.

Check all your power connections; battery, starter, etc.

Starter is good. Tested it and used someones elses working starter. This situation came about because I had lend my distributor to a cousin. After he returned it, put it back on it wouldn't start up anymore. Distributor still works, works on his car.

You made sure the starter signal wire to the solenoid is connected right? The 18-ish awg wire with the female spade connector? If so check to see if you are getting 12v there in while cranking. If not trace the open.

If that's ok and you're sure the starter is good it may be either the sun ring on the flywheel is broken off or you might have a broken timing belt. Is your crank pulley spinning when you try to start it? If so take the oil cap off and look at the rocker arms when you crank and see if they move. If crank pulley turns and rockers arms don't move = broken t-belt. If your crank pulley is not spinning while cranking then it may be a broken flywheel. Is it aftermarket?

Edit:
just read your last post. If you checked what I posted above and everything is ok then check your connections on the distributor. If you find a bad connection, correct it and remove the spark plugs. Put about a teaspoon of oil into each cylinder. You may have washed down your cylinder walls with fuel with all that cranking.

if this started after u lent the distributor to someone wouldnt that mean the distributor caused the problem?? seems like you would check that first instead of jumpin on the starter
