Default Play in shifter

I have a large amount of slack in my shifter. The up and down motion seems tight enough but the side to side is ridiculous. It doesn't matter if i am in gear or not the shifter loosely flops back and forth about 6 inches.

My question is has anyone had this problem and successfully fixed it? I am wondering where this slack is coming from, the transmission itself, the bushings in the linkage? I crawled under my car and it seems like the shifter is able to flop back and forth without affecting the shifting mechanism on the transmission.

Basically, i'd like to not order a bunch of new bushings and things to rebuild the linkage if this is a known problem for another component.

thanks

Have you ever removed the shift linkage?

there is a ''bitch pin'' in the linkage.. sometimes people take the pin out and replace it with a bolt which will cause slack..

If that's not the issue i'd say ES shifter bushings will fix your problem.

the bitch pin is intact.
the ES bushings i am aware of only replace the two large bushings at either end of the linkage, these two bushings are in pretty good condition. if anything i was thinking the bushing that goes around the ball of the shifter itself, but even that doesn't feel like it would fix it.;

are you using and aftermarket shift lever? Sometimes they cause some slop (cheap ones). Make sure the bolt that connects the shifter to the shift linkage is nice and tight.

Also there is suppossed to be bushings around the shifter.. (the bolt goes thru the shifter) and there's suppossed to be bushings in there as well
