Default OVERHEATING!

AGH My engines temp keeps going way up then down, and when the guage says my engine is at full temp the heat comming from the dash is ice cold still, and now theres steam or something comming from somewhere... but i cant seem to find any hoses leaking and it seems to be comming from under the block, my compression in order from cylinder 1-4 is 170-165-165-170, so its not the head gasket. does anybody know what has happened? I have replaced the thermostat and added some more 50/50 antifreeze mix... And my Maintence light blinks for 2 seconds on start up... WTF happened?! My car usually idles at 2000 at cold start and 800 when its warm, how do i fix that too? And for some reason its cold idling at 2500 - 3000 and its 11 degrees here, NEED HELP!

Generally if I have a car that acts as you describe I find it is usually a head gasket problem. I have never had one be a water pump(thats a LOT of cars) I have had faulty t-stats though. As for your idle problem. Check your iac valve. May be stuck. Also check to make sure the cable isn't hanging up or the tb isn't hanging up.
