Default over-heating issue

Hey guys, Last night on a 200 mile trip back to school I started having some major over heating issues. At first I thought it was the thermostat/thermomator (whichever one controls the temp. gauge) because I was advised by a mechanic this was the problem, but after a good hour of driving my check engine light came on.

I immediatly pulled over, let it cool, then drove no higher than 40 mph to the next exit in the break down lane. I checked my antifreeze level, which was low. So, I added some and let it sit for a minute, but didn't bring my temp. down at all.

Long story short, I had it towed to Pep Boys, which I know they charge a lot, but I was in the middle of no where. They called today and told me I need a new radiator...

$504.14 later, that's where I'm at. My question is, since it was failing for so long (i know it was failing because i'd been filling up the antifreeze every few weeks or so), could this have caused a lack in power? I've felt my engine become very sluggish, and since the coolant goes into the engine and cools the cylinder walls, if it wasn't getting propper coolant, would this cause the lack in power? Thank you for any help. Sorry for writing a novel...

How hot were you letting your car get?
You didn't think somethng was wrong when you had to continually add coolant "for so long"? Did you ever get rid of the air in the system after adding the coolant?

I knew something was wrong... but, listening to two mechanics they both said I had a faulty thermostat. They said the leaking (which was extremely minimal at the time) was probably a cracked tube. I take extremely good care of my car. I baby the hell out of it. Unfortunatly I'm at school right now, with very few funds, so I figured since mechanics told me it wasn't a major issue, I could wait. I didn't let it get very hot. The second it got up to hot, i would pull over and turn it off and wait til it cooled down til i drove some more. i had only added coolant twice in a month and a half. it was just this trip where it just started pouring out of the bottom of my car.
