optima bat. questions
whats ur guy's view's on the yellow tops vs red tops.. my uncle was saying its a waste of money to get one of the optima battery's for what they do.. not sure exactly what he ment by it, but it was to my understanding that if you have a system or something, the deep cycle "yellow top" would be better, and the red top was to help performance.
what do you guys think

Re: optima bat. questions (..::91TEG-G2::..)
I hate both all my red tops died after being drained once, and the yellow top is supposed to be deep cycle but 1 or 2 re-charges and it dies. Try a Odyessy....

I'm about to pick up on an Optima after my motor is dropped. Alot of people I know have the Red tops and not one has complained yet. In my eyes, batteries are an good investment. I heard Odyessy is pretty good.

I worked at Sears Auto for a brief time and we sold those Optima batteries. My personal opinion is that they're a waste of money if you don't have a lot of things that might drain the battery (like an extensive stereo system). The advantage to the Optima batteries is that they have cells that spiral around in cylinders, and they're supposed to be able to be mounted in any way, they are guaranteed not to leak, and are more resistant to vibration. I actually sold a Red Top to some guy that came in with an AE86, his reasoning for buying one was that it'd hold up to the vibration during drifting... . Whatever, I was on commission
Anyway, if you've just got your normal car with nothing that requires much more juice to run, then you'll be fine with a standard battery. I used a Die Hard in my old Integra and it worked perfectly fine.

i have a bosch in mine now.. and on the positive (+) terminal, where the 4ga. amp wire is hooked up.. theres dry acid around there, what could be causing that?
cuz i have a system in my car, 700-800 watt's, and when i have it up to 10 (alpine deck) the ?altanator? at idle, starts to go up and down a little bit.. u think i could just get a newer alt. that pump's out a little bit more volt's?

I don't think the alternator is your problem, because if it was, the battery should be getting the life sucked out of it. My idle moves around a bit when I turn on accessories, I haven't figured it out yet, but maybe it's the same thing. The stuff around the terminal could be due to corrosion, or a leak in the battery. Honestly, I'm not really sure. You could try an Optima to see if it solves the problem, but you might want to consult some type of stereo or electronics specialist first. You could even try the car audio forum here on HT. Sorry I can't be of much more help..

Re: optima bat. questions (..::91TEG-G2::..)
I put an Optima red top in my old Camry. The main reason I bought it was because it was sealed, and I wanted to mount the battery in the trunk to make room for a custom intake I was planning on doing (then my car came up for sale ).
But yeah I would say if you have alot of stereo stuff, OR if you want to mount the battery in the trunk for better weight distribution or whatever, Optima would be a good choice. If you want to keep your battery up front and don't have alot of power-drawing accessories, but you do want something lighter, you might consider one of the lightweight racing batteries out there.

i just saw a pic of a wrx with an odyessey battery in it, it was freakin small, it had a red top on it. it was like half the width and length of normal batt.s was i lookin at that right and why is that size so small?

Personally it depends on what the application use for your car. If you plan to have a stereo system then most likely the yellow deep cycle battery because it will recharged back on its own, however the red tops are good for normal use. Compared to other batteries, these are gels filled so they can be position in almost any angle. From expereince these batteries last long and worth the money.

I've got an Optima yellow top and I'm satisfied with it. It's never failed to start my car. FYI - yellow 51R is the only one that will fit your stock battery tray.

I've also got a yellow top 51R in my 95 GS-R sedan for nine months now and I've had no problems nor complaints.
From what I read, even having your alarm on all the time can drain your battery in some cases...
Peace
TQ

Re: optima bat. questions (Elfstone)
I have yet to put one in my teg but used the deep cycle in the boat and camper. They worked awesome. The only battery that came close in the camper was the huge *** deep cycle caterpillar battery that I had. I used them both together(Had lost of playstation and xbox to play at the lake when I wasn't boating). On the boat it had a little *** alternator from a fork lift(LOL) and needed as much battery as it could. Figure it would be bouncing around and getting wet and not getting a good charge at all. And it worked awesome for the last 2 seasons that we ran the boat. I miss my baby but I'll build another one. A better one.

Yellow Tops are Deep Cycle batteries.
Red Tops are Starter batteries (much like regular automotive batteries).
Regular Starter batteries usually put out more Cold Cranking Amps (CCA's), because thats what they are designed to do. -Crank out more amps to start your car, truck, suv, etc...
Deep Cycle batteries usually last longer. they're designed to hold a charge longer and be able to survive a couple complete energy drains.
^but nothings perfect..

I'm working on my 3rd Red Top in 2 yrs in my Legend right now. Its got a full system. I think it's either the alternator or the battery, but If I keep the car in the garage for over a week without driving it, then the battery dies. Wierd. I'd be happy if they refunded all my $$ and me going back to Die Hard.

if you have an audio system..or leave the car/boat/RV for long periods of times then thats what Deep Cycle batteries are made for..
ie: yellow top/deep cycle would probably be better for you..

Optimas are supposed to have 3 year full-replacement on them, so you should be able to get a new one free of charge.

Actually, they have a full one year replacement. You shouldn't be having the problem your having with the red top. Sounds like you have a short some where.
