the heater feeds off of your cooling system. this is why you don't want to turn on the heater when the engine isn't warm yet...you'll get cold air. there are two hoses connected to the firewall, one brings water/coolant from the engine and one returns it. just above your passenger's feet is a heater box that has a small radiator inside. so basically when you turn on the heater, it's like giving yourself a bigger radiator and the heat is expelled into the passenger compartment.

and this is also why you should use the heater when the car is under heavy load [like going uphill for a long time on a hot day].

never heard of it going all the way cold, tho. maybe try and let the car warm up a little longer before using the heater?

Maybe you have a Thermostat problem? Does your engine temp stay below mid point (like 1/4) when that happens?

yes when the heater is on it drops the heat nearly all the way to cold and it will just stay there untill I turn of the heater then it warms back up. The timing belt and water pump were recently changed before I bought the car could that have an effect?
