intake manifolds between pr3 and p72 heads are NOT interchangable due to their different bolt patterns, UNLESS he machined the intake manifold, which can be questionable

Maybe when he says full GS-R motor, he means the older GS-R (1.7 litre) from the 2nd gen integras.

To be fully sure, check the block stamp, should be b1xxx, so b18a1 b18b1 b18c1 b17a1

Also, check the head stamp, it should be above the header. It should look like this

x I x

So 9 I 5, or 9 I 8. This is the year of the head. It might be slightly rotated or upside down, so a 95 might look like 2 I 6 (somewhat)

Finally, a third stamp on the head, in the same location, will say either

pr3 - x or p72-1

It can be either pr3-1 pr3-2 pr3-3 and pr3-4 if I am not mistaken, meaning its a b16/typeR/Old b17 gsr head, or it can say p72 which is a gsr head. (from the newer 94-01 GS-Rs)

Im assuming you have an LSVtec, but thats just a guess. Let us know and we can break it down! I don't even know if this is your main concern, but its a start!
B18C1. P72 (So its a stock GSR engine? that would be good news.)

'main concern' is still this oil thing, getting mixed answers.

Nice pick up. Valve cover color is kind of wild though.
Not a fan of the Valve Cover, wish it was just red and Black. I was going through some of the pictures and I just can't figure out how you all paint it to look so nice? tape off all the lettering and just go for it?

Just an Update. Finally got around to doing somethings as summer is kickin off. Added some much needed security and got to replace the broken studs on the valve cover.

Everything look A-Okay?

looking good. I would say you made a good buy. I personaly wouldnt worry about the oil as much as you are. when people say this isnt normal... its not what honda intended to happen so no its not normal but very common on the gsr engine. check your oil at every fill up and keep track how much you have to put it and get back to us.

Nice xj! I used to have then i rolled it got a wrangler thats my crawler. If you dont have big black and blue cloud of smoke behind you all the time its probabley not that big of a deal. Just check it at fill up like everyones eles is saying and keep track of it.

I'm hoping this helps the oil consumption. Would there be any obvious signs of problems from this picture though?

From what I can see, it doesn't look too bad, I've seen a lot of valve covers pulled on newly acquired cars and it is apparent that regular maintenance didn't happen, chunky gross burnt up oil caking everything up.

Before you put it back on (if you haven't done so already), I would adjust the valve lash since you already have it off and it's not that hard and there's no telling when it was definitely done before.

If you don't adjust the valves and simply want to toss the valve cover back on, I would at least clean the gasket meeting surfaces on the head (outer edge perimeter and spark plug tubes) and apply Hondabond (or Permatex Gray RTV sealant) on the spark plug tube gaskets and 8 corners of the recesses as per the service manual. Also, when you torque it back down, to prevent oil leaks, you can follow the sequence in the picture attached, they only need to be torqued to 7.2 ft/lbs which is not much at all.

Damn, never thought I'd end up typing that much on this post....sorry man.

Hey good info. I put it back together so I'll see if I have any leaks or anything, If I do, I'll just do it again. Not like its hard!

okay man.. your car is fine. trust me. gsr motor is prolly not the best engine to have for gas milage though.. you do have to run 93 octane. which dosent help with gas prices. but you already bought it. just drive it.. i know youre a smart guy and atleast somewhat mechanically inclined.. be smart. check oil every few days and ****.. keep an eye on gauges.. and youll be fine.

when you realy look at it Gas is Not that bad.

where i live 87 is $4.05 a gal and 93 is $4.25 so with a 12 gal tank that only $2.40 more per tank.

so the 93 Teg I am driving right now (on loan from a Buddy) gets 324 miles on a Tank of 87 thats 27 MPG.
and a tank of 93 i get 375 miles and that is 31.25 MPG and it feels stronger when pulling hills.
so if i take the the MPG of 93 and subtract the 87 i get a 51 MPG more per tank for only $2.40 and for the cost that a Massive Gain over what it cost me to run 93 in the car.

Really? High Octane would give me better MPG? Well, maybe I'll start doing that...

As far as MPG, its been just fine. Its been worth getting a little worse MPG over my old toyota just simply because its got some kick to it too.

#tbt.

Been 2 years now. Still love this thing. Unfortunately might have to move to a 4-door. Just need the room.

But shooooot, I now understand the 'Rave' about Honda. Cheap. Easy. Quick. Just a great all around DD. I've put on ~25k with little cost. That being said, if I keep it, I have a list of stuff. Nothing out of the usual.
