New Integra owner (GSR Swap) {Updated 3-20-14 #tbt}
So, I'm a Jeep guy, have myself a pretty nice XJ. I sold my DD which was a toyota Paseo and wanted something with a little more power and this just happened to come across on CList. Honestly, I feel like I might have made a dumb buy because I bought it so quickly without even looking up what I have. Hoping you guys can help me with some information.
Now he told me it has the 2001 GSR engine with Skunk? Cams. Stock LS transmission. Told me the engine had 78k miles (I do believe him)
He painted it and put in some leather too. Has a exhaust kit also.
I got it for $3,200. Honestly, all I really need is a good DD that gets about 30 MPG city. Will this meet those needs? (I deliver pizza's on the weekends and this would be my Pizza car) Or Am I just going to tear it up and regret this purchase?
I've been reading like crazy the past few days, sounds like its pretty normal for this engine to Smoke blue a little at high RPMs?

Re: New Integra owner (GSR Swap)
Welcome! I like your xj. I am wanting to get one for my next project.
Not normal for a car to be smoking. Prob want to look into doing a compression test
You will def have better gas mileage with the LS tranny, just not as responsive as a gsr tranny or one with shorter gears.
3k sounds like a reasonable price for that car in its condition which appears to be a pretty clean DC.

He already bought the car. He mentions it in his post where he didn't put much research in to it before getting it. He also stated he purchased this for fuel economy so he is fine with that LS tranny

Don't get ahead of yourself do a compression test and if you have low numbers go ahead and do a leak down test. If your lucky you will only need new valve seals.

Re: New Integra owner (GSR Swap)
So is this an LS with Skunk 2 cams? Or is it a GSR swap? Can you look at the block code to see if it says "b18xx"? It'll either have a letter followed by a number or just a letter AFAIK. $3200 isn't a bad deal, most Hondas burn oil at high RPM anyhow, I wouldn't sweat it unless it did it all the time (just driving normally). Definitely agree on swapping out the LS trans for a b16 trans, or something with better gearing. LS transmission gear blows a fat one. Definitely do the comp. test, but don't freak out if the numbers are low, what you're looking for is consistency. Not all testers read the same.

Its a GSR swap, but just to verify, where do I find the block code?
I'll do the Compression test and leak down in the next week or so, its good to know where I'm at anyway. Interested to know how much Valve seals are or how hard they are, never done an engine rebuild.

It is to the left of the header and right of the tranny about mid way down. Ya might have to wipe it off to read
Try this link 4th pic over where it is circled in green

blue smoke is just oil burning, unless its puffin like a freight train I wouldnt read too much into it unless you have a really heavy foot. My prelude puffed a lil smoke on startup and high revs/shifting but it lasted forever with me beating it like a red-headed step child :D

I'll still do a compression check.

I would love to have a crawler but I would almost have to travel half way across the US to find the needed terrain. And moving isn't an option, I have to have my beaches!!

Re: New Integra owner (GSR Swap)
It lasted about a year, and I did alot of long distance driving, 600+ miles sometimes,at speeds over 120 I was young and stupid, really drove the **** out of it, I was trying to blow it up because I had a built H22 I wanted to swap in. Dirt, mud, water it saw it all. I even jumped it a couple times lol

Re: New Integra owner (GSR Swap)
Strange, why would he put an LS tranny on a GS-R.......... Its a good tranny.
To be sure, you should be at roughly 3000 rpm at 80 km/h in 4th gear, and 3000rpm at 60km/h in 3rd gear. Thats roughly 55 / 40 in miles. If it differs, its most likely a GS-R tranny.
As far as the smoking blue goes, how much oil is it burning? A quart a month? And when you say high rpms, how high are we talking here? It probably isnt tuned for the skunk2 intake manifold. You can't run a stock ECU on it since it will cause problems after 5800.

Well I've only had it a week, I'll keep an eye on it and figure out just how much oil compared to miles. I think it only puffs a little while VTEC kicks in.
The Intake is from a Type R. The Skunk's are the Cam's apparently.

Re: New Integra owner (GSR Swap)
^ You cant put a Type R manifold on a GSR Head.
B16 head and Integra Type R head and b17 (OLDschool GS-R) heads are - pr3 cast
p72 GS-R (Newer gsr, 94-01) - p72 cast.
intake manifolds between pr3 and p72 heads are NOT interchangable due to their different bolt patterns, UNLESS he machined the intake manifold, which can be questionable
Maybe when he says full GS-R motor, he means the older GS-R (1.7 litre) from the 2nd gen integras.
To be fully sure, check the block stamp, should be b1xxx, so b18a1 b18b1 b18c1 b17a1
Also, check the head stamp, it should be above the header. It should look like this
x I x
So 9 I 5, or 9 I 8. This is the year of the head. It might be slightly rotated or upside down, so a 95 might look like 2 I 6 (somewhat)
Finally, a third stamp on the head, in the same location, will say either
pr3 - x or p72-1
It can be either pr3-1 pr3-2 pr3-3 and pr3-4 if I am not mistaken, meaning its a b16/typeR/Old b17 gsr head, or it can say p72 which is a gsr head. (from the newer 94-01 GS-Rs)
Im assuming you have an LSVtec, but thats just a guess. Let us know and we can break it down! I don't even know if this is your main concern, but its a start!

maybe its a skunk2 manifold, aren't they type r replicas? maybe that's what he meant. But I don't see the logo on the top like most have.
Nice pick up. Valve cover color is kind of wild though.
