Need some engine selection advice
I'm buying a 90 Teg off my friend's bro for 200 bucks. Just the shell, no engine tranny, it has new rims and tires, body is in better condition then my current car (97 jetta 2.0), interior is very very clean, paint is basically flawless, 203k miles. Now im in tech school so working on my car will be no problem at all, but first im trying to make an engine dicision. Time isnt really problem, i wanna keep this car for a couple years unless i get a good deal if anyone wants to buy it. I was thinkin a b18, cuz i got a thing for boost and i hear b18 are very responsive to boost with the right tuning. i would love to increase the torque as much as possible, even more so then the hp. any advice would be greatly, greatly appreciated. thanks
sounds like a b18a/b would be best for you if you want to boost...
you can find them for cheap if you blow it up
vtec doesnt really matter if you want to boost it...

yeah.. a b18a/b would probably be the best to suit your needs/goals.. Theyre cheap in case you mess it up and you can get about 300 hp or so on a stock block. check out hmotorsonline.com for engine swaps.
just something obd1.. 94-95 probably that way when you go turbo you wont have to worry about the conversion and ****. I know youll have to convert it to obd1 but i dunno, i just think thats less trouble, I could be wrong though.. I dont know much about swapping engines in older model tegs, so wait for a second opinion.. but I think a 94-95 would be the best.

Um, technically any honda dohc engine is a hemi, and I would venture to guess that the sohc are as well, but I don't know nearly as much about them. A "hemi" is just a hemispherical head, which might have been new technology for the american car manufacturers in the 60s, but has been used elsewhere for much longer than that. Its just dodge trying to reuse an old namesake to inspire the idiotic masses into thinking it has to be better.

While I love my vtec, and I would personally use a vtec engine, even for boost, if I had the funds. It would certainly be cheaper to play with a non-vtec engine though. With the lower revs of the b18a/b, you don't need to worry if the turbo will still flow decently at 8k+ rpm.
So, my vote would be for a b18a/b, a gsr, itr, or ctr tranny, and a smaller turbo to get it to spool up at a reasonable rpm.

i would try and get a complete b18a who has done an engine swap...
the engine year doesnt matter really, just the parts you use with it..
id use an obd1 ecu, conversion harness, and dizzy for ease of tuning later..
dont forget g2ic.com either
