muffler sole purpose?
Nope. It's purpose is to reduce the noise coming from the engine. The catalytic converter deals with the exhaust fumes and such. If you get a straight through muffler its louder, and mufflers with offset in and out are more quiet.
i think they canceled out the decibal rate but i do believe that u MUST have a muffler on your car [i.e. people with apexi N1's passing smog] and be CARB approved...and i dont think it is smog related except for a cat...anyone know if im right or wrong b/c id like to know seeing i have to smog my car in a couple of months....HTH!
First of all, w00t I'm finally a Honda-Tech member
. Second the muffler is, as far as I know, and I have done some homework on them, used to control sound. Without one it would be very loud and the backfire would be insane lol. It really sounds better with the IMO. However, the catalytic converter is very important for smog. It filters the carbon minoxide (I think thats right) from the exhaust so that you get more air than toxic gas coming out your car. I believe that is the #1 component you need to pass smog. People get the large catalytic converters that let more flow through and it increases the carbon coming out so they don't pass smog. I would worry about that the most. A stock one should pass so as long as you don't have holes in your exhaust pipe. In a muffler where you have offset in and out both pipes are perpherated so that when sound comes in it goes out the holes at an angle and when the remaining sound waves reach the end of the pipe (also the back wall of the muffler) they reflect back into oncoming sound waves so that they cancel eachother out. With a straight through muffler, like an APEXi N1, the inside is perherated and around that is the glass pack which is actually some set up of compacted glass that absorbs the sound waves.

cool thanks for the repliees. im all for Cat convertors since i do care about the environment. im doing a diagram on how to do a quick release piece on the exhaust with the stock piece still in place but i would not do it if it means im taking a smog reduction piece of. just making sure that my premesis is correct.
