Very hard if you don't have the right tools and knowledge as to how to install a LSD. You basically have to take the transmission apart. Basically if you have to ask how hard it is, have a professional do it.

right on
It was new to me, but with a helms and three days of 6 hours of work each, mine was in and ready to go with a new ACT clutch and pressure plate .
Well you need a lot of tools, but not that many. you NEED a Helms manual and info from C-speed and HYBRID also, they were helpful where the Helms wasnt.
It is a cost saver to do it yourself though, prices around here to just drop an dreinstall the tranny were upwards of $300... funk that ! -->all the right tools didnt even cost me $200 anyhow!
Plus you need to order shims once you fit the (ITR) LSD in the tranny case, that takes a few days too!

if you have any questions pre/during/post install, email or IM me. good luck chum

That was once said to me before I installed my turbo. Anyhow, I'm looking to see what kinda problems I would run into and some tips to make the job easier. I will be installing a new clutch for the first time and possibly a Quaife LSD since I'll have the tranny out. It doesn't really look that bad in my helm's, but just wondering if I'm overlooking some things.
Thanks for your replies and help

Its a bitch. Its like an 8 hour job with power tools. You have to take off both half shafts and drop the tranny, crack it open. Inside of a transmission scares me!
I paid a mechanic to do mine.

If your gonna do it yourself some tips that I would suggest are get the gasket for the transmission case before you crack it open - unlike me ... and your gonna need to refill it with transmission oil.

I know on my GSR the stock speedometer gear had to be pressed off and put onto the Quaife. We actually didn't figure this out until after the install and had to tear everything back apart

Quaife says the gear breaks about 90% of the time and you have to buy a WHOLE stock diff to get the gear. Why they didn't just make thier own speedo gear is beyond me.

How ever you get the job done it will be well worth it. The Quaife is worth every penny! I have done no better mod.

get a punch to remove the shift linkage pin. -->that alone took me almost a half hour of pounding with different sized things until I found the right piece to get it out, should had a better jack to lift my car higher to get more space to swing a mallet

you will need a tranny jack and a jack for the motor.

the ring gear bolts are left hand thread. I used a huge C-clamp on the oem diff to get leverage while wrenching off those bolts.

hmm, anything else?.. um, tranny case gasket? I am 99% sure you just use hondabond liquid gasket goopy gray stuff.

here is some more info so if anyone does a search they can read up on this stuff....

you WILL need to buy shims to fit the diff in the tranny case with the proper clearance.. like how you use feelers on a valve adjustment, that is how you check the clearance once you get the tranny back together, then you take it apart and order shims of a certain thickness from a dealer.
I WAS LUCKY and was able to use the shims my tranny had in it already... with a little modding from the guys in the machine shop where I work

also give yourself plenty of room under the car so you can hammer out the shift linkage pin. USE the correct size punch to get it out too, I started too small and actually spread it open making it harder to push out! DOH!

be careful when you remove the bolts in the tranny case once you are splitting it open.. the two I mean (maybe 3) specificly are bolts that hold a ball bearing (bb)against the tranny mainshaft (?) to keep it in a certain position.
-->dont lose those ball bearings!

hmmm, another thing is to wrap the gears in the tranyn with masking tape to hold them together once you split the case. this way you can remove the whole setup in one piece which makes it way less intimidating and so much faster. dont wrap them together too tightly otherwise it willl not come out too easily. just wrap them enough to keep them all together. like 4 times around each gear as you go up the shaft there abnout I dunno, 12 gears?

also, a 4 foot bar on the end of my ratchet got the axle nut off easily with one try.

um, yeah... popping the axles out is a bitch sometimes but patience is a virtue. I have heard rotating the axle a bit may help find a spot where the C-clip on the end will be more receptive to removal.

be careful popping off the lower balljoints too if you use a fork splitter type, I split a joint boot that way and decided to use a clamp type separator that actually screws against the end of the bolt and in effect pushes the balljoit out.
