Default Ignition problem?

Hey guys, i'm trying to sell my dad's 91 LS sedan in order for me to get a new car, yet it has had a reacurring problem that i need to get worked out in order to do so. We've taken in to several shops to get it looked at, and they said it was fixed...but then it would start doing the same thing again. The Problem: Whenever it gets pretty cold outside and you've been driving, and then you go to turn the car off, the car will turn off, but the key will not come out of the ignition. Yet the same problem has also occured when i was at a stop light once (its an auto) and i put it in park, I couldn't get it to come back out of park. So i'm not quite sure if its the transmission or the ignition or what in the hell is going on. Keep in mind this only happens when its cold outside, during the summer it has no problems whatsoever. Any one have any idea what the problem is? Anything would help. Thanks, Clay

Perhaps it's the shift selector switch? It's a problem I'm still dealing
with myself. The key can't be removed until the car has detected that
you're in park. Replacing the switch is easy. The part can be bought
from a dealer for approximately $50-60.

By the way, this problem is common among 90-93 Integra's.
It's more of an annoying inconvience than a real problen.

Yea, it usually takes like 5 minutes or so, and then the igntion will release the key. It's just going to suck selling it to someone and them realizing that they cant get the damn key out of the ignition.

Yeah, it may be a little more difficult to sell it. If you don't want to spend
the cash to replace the switch, make sure you explain it to the buyer.

If it has to do with the switch not detecting the key then why does it stick in park and not go back into drive, it has to be something more complicated than that don't you think?

It's not supposed to let you take the key out unless the shifter is in park. So there's a switch on the shift lever that tells the key cylinder that it's ok to release the key. That's screwed up or needs adjustment.

There's also a lock that prevents you from shifting OUT of park, unless you're holding the brake pedal down. So the switch on the brake pedal is screwed up or needs adjustment.

Why don't you see if you can adjust those switches, maybe it's not too hard to just fix it before you sell it...

NegroCoupe, the part # for the gear selector switch is: 35700-SK7-A01

You'll need a phillips head screwdriver, 10mm socket, ratchet, extension
and a small flathead screwdriver to install thw new switch. If you need
exact directions to replace it if you decide to do so, let me know.

By your description, I'm 90% sure it's your gear sensor switch.

</TD></TR></TABLE>Yeah, but that doesn't explain why he can't get it out of park. I think his brake switch is ALSO messed up.

If its the brake switch and the sensor switch, can anyone explain why this problem only occurs when its cold outside?... like 45 degrees or less.
