High Idle problem
I've got a high idle problem with my GS-R thats been going on for about 6 months or so and I've been procrastinating getting around to it. Here it is. Whenever I start my engine and its cold it will idle between 2300-2700rpms, higher when its colder outside. When the engine warms up it slowly goes back down to the normal 900 rpm (give or take a few) idle. So basically once the engine is fully warmed up it goes away. However, occasionally there are exceptions to the rule. Sometimes after being on the highway for a while (crusing around 80mph) if I come to a stop light and idle, sometimes it will hang around 1500rpm.
Any ideas? Maybe something to do with a vacuum leak? I took it to the acura dealership over a month ago (when the engine was warm) and they "couldn't find anything wrong" and suggested I clean my air filter
I need to take care of this soon b/c if the idle's high when I get my car inspected it won't pass (rpms must be low for idle emissions test).

i'm inclined to think that your idle air control valve is probably the problem, either its' gunked up or failing somehow. it's on the throttle body (not sure exactly where on a 92 gs-r)
also make sure the throttle and throttle cable aren't sticking by spraying them with good lube (silicone lube). it doesn't sound like this is your problem, but it might be; at the very least this wouldn't hurt, and it's so easy to do.

One thing I forgot to mention (going against the stuck theory). If i blip the throttle when its idling high around 2500rpm...it'll go down to where it should be, around 900rpm, but then it will go back up
So would that mean I need to replace the idle control valve? Or clean it? I'm not too too familiar with the intake area of my engine, would it be something simple enough for me to tackle?
when you blip the throttle to get it to go back down that's the choke on the throttle body, check the IACV but also re-adjust your throttle cable and make sure your gas pedal isn't sticking

my car almost does the same thing, but the rpm jump between 1k and 1500 and then goes back to 800rpm idle then back sometimes
im thinkin it may be a vacuum leak, but i have checked over everything
my next thought was the iac valve.
think i may clean it out somehow

Dawsonb17a,
I am having the exact same problem with my 95 Civic LX.
I have cleaned off the throttle cable (it wasn't too dirty looking) and also cleaned the butterfly in the throttle body with some carb cleaner. I thought I had fixed it with that but as you say it only happens sometimes and then 2 days later I noted that it was doing it again.
I still have no solution. I would think that if it was a vacuum leak then it would be a 100% constant problem, right?
Perhaps it is the IACV.. is there a way to clean this? or do you just replace it and hope that fixes the problem?
