HELP...spring install.
Does anyone know how to get the Locking Nut from the damper on the rear strut removed if it's ceased? We're in the middle of installing springs on my 97 teg and we can't seem to get the nut off (on both sides too).
If anyone has any suggestions of what we could try, please post away.
Thanks guys.
Nick

electric impact gun - makes quick work of it.
If I'm really stuck, I have to use an allen wrench with a 14mm box wrench or a 14mm crow's foot with a ratchet and longer lever arm.

We've tried the impact gun and the allen key method that you suggested. We've also used some Liquid Wrench but so far, no luck. Problem being that if you turn the allen key too hard it will strip itself and turn freely inside so I want to avoid that.
What's PB Blaster?
Thanks for the help.

Slap a pair of spring compressors on there to take the tension off of the spring hat. It'll make turning the nut a lot easier.
Use the PB Blaster...it'll make the nut ride the threads easier. PB Blaster is like WD-40, only better.
PB Blaster is available at your local Pep Girls or Autozone.

If your doing the job right you will be using new shocks . If this is the case then lock some vise grips right on the piston and clamp it as tight as you can , then hit it with the impact gun . Obviously if your using the same shocks DO NOT DO THIS!!Or thake it to a shop with a more powerful impact gun .
Just get some new shocks and do what the last guy said. Both times I did the springs I have had a problem w/ at least one shock on that nut. Just get a good craftsman 14mm, we found that some allen wrenches aren't the exact fit. Get a good grip and turn the hell out of it.

I'm the grease monkey doing most of the wrench turning. We tried compressing the spring to reduce tension, and my 500 ft/lbs air impact turns the hole strut shaft. We tried using a Mastercraft 5mm Allen wrench with 3/8 socket, and with the amount of pressure we where exerting, you could see the Allen key starting to turn.
It's been soaking overnight in Liquid Wrench, I'll try to locate some of the PB Blaster today.

If you guys find PB in Canada let me (and all the other canucks) where to get it. I haven't looked but I plan on putting on my new lowering springs in about a month so any info would be helpful.
I don't know if you are having the same problems that I did, but my car was a rust bucket (93 Civic). This is what I did to get it off.
First I sprayed the thing with Liquid Wrench and kept some HEAT on it. But that didn't work so I sprayed some more on it and let my air tools have a field day with it. Still didn't work. Finally I sucked it up and started beating the things with a mallet to sort of give it a nice little "who's your father" I don't know if this helped or not but I got it off after some pounding and a lot of air tool. Good Luck

a couple thing you need to do. Remove the entire shock/spring from the car. Then take it on the ground and place it on a block of wood then have some one really strong hold the shock. get about a 6" allan key and set it in the hole and rest the rest agaisnt the ground so the ground acts as the holder of the alan key wrench. then get the proper size socket with a massive torque bar. ( i use a bike seat post) then just crank that bastard off. This worked for me.
I agree with taking it out of your car. It gives you a lot more room to work with and better angle of attack
. When i installed new shocks on my old buick lesabre I used a 5 foot long fly fishing rod holder as my breaker bar. Just remember to go really really slow if you do this method.

Got them apart last night. Let the bolts sit in Liquid Wrench all night, got the yellow Liquid Wrench last night. The trick was wacking a socket on the nut, then using the air wrench to remove the bolts.
Good to hear you got it off. I had the same problem this weekend, except I stripped the allen key. My suggestion was going to be compress the springs and cut the bolt lenthwise. Make sure not to cut into the threads.
