Default First timer old timer

Hi folks this is my first post and I’m new to Honda cars especially the one I just bought, I’m a total newb but have a bit of knowledge from researching here n there the last week since. I took my son to look at a car that sounded good for the price, and it’s what he calls his dream car..a 98 civic hatchback with a swapped integra motor that needed new coil overs and tires, but it was black and had fancy rims, all kinds a mods suspension exhaust etc..., no rust ! looked decent let’s do it !
$3800 Canadian bux
It wasn’t insured so couldn’t test drive but it runs
the young girl we bought it off says a few things about it that made it sound awesome and fast.
Put an a-b paper on to drive home.
I tell ya the thing was bouncing and pulling and handles like hell, but Jesus did it go like stink in a straight line !
im an old school car guy had A camaro and a chevelle before that back in my days..my other son has an RX8 and I love em all of there cool and go fast !! .. but this little front wheel drive has something in it too I’m thinking !!! So looked up numbers n researched because I need to know .. ya know ?
and then after some confusion between different b18c motors and I wasn’t in know about anything at all until a few of you all made it clear how to tell .. amd what the differences are !!
It’s 98 spec ITR from 99 integra type R. Has p3-4
on block so 200 hp ???!!!!

And i thought I was buying something that just had a few bolt on fast parts .. ha !

so we’re happy happy but want to do it justice and it’s a father son project. So first thing we did was order skunk2 coil overs and new tires for next week install before we drive it, It’s getting polished and loved on, because been sitting for over a year, had leaves under the hood ! She cleaned up really good though I tell ya for a 1998 👍

I have questions to those who know this engine and i really appreciate any help at all, hopefully get a few answers I really have a lack of knowledge with some things .
Some details:
Skunk 2 adjustable cams..both set at zero
injen performance intake
4-1 exhaust out into a proper fairly new looking pipe system
sounds like a high flow pump and I see an AFE fuel regulator?

First off any recommendations what I should first check and look for with this engine before cutting it loose ? I’d like to change plugs but have a hard time to find which ones to get that are best. Only says #7
whats that number equal to an NGK # ???

What about the fuel system what to check of importance besides filter ?

ignition stuff to maintain?

do the mods mentioned boost the hp in this engine ? How much ?

The cams are adjustable so since I seen some you tube vids of guys advancing or tweaking them gives hp gains in the low/mid rpms which I think would be excellent but I’m unsure if it’s advisable with this engine..

many and all advice is ver appreciated thanks !!!

you might notice the valve cover isn’t red, threw me off while trying to identify the motor until I asked the seller if had been painted at some time amd sure enough yes it used to be red, she painted it because it was chipped or peeling lol 😁

Lot of questions there, and it looks like you found yourself a little gem if it is a B18C Type R motor...

If it were mine I'd change the timing belt, water pump, and all fluids (Coolant, oil and transmission fluid). The ignition systems are durable and I wouldn't replace anything other than maybe plugs if it's still running well.

Maybe do a leak down and compression test to see how healthy the motor is. Keep an eye on the oil levels as you drive it. Motors with a long history of abuse will burn a good amount of oil.

Aftermarket air intake, header and exhaust do add power but would add more if you added a tunable ECU like the Hondata S300 (There are others but Hondata is the most popular), and had a reputable shop tune the system on a dyno. Since your cam gears are adjustable, cam timing can also be tuned on a dyno. I wouldn't touch them otherwise.

Good engine if it's legit, which it appears to be. Has correct '98 spec header too which is decent for OEM. Yes 200hp, they do well for a 1.8 NA. Hence the hype...

thanks for the advice, I ordered the timing belt with water pump kit, plugs and wires.

is there a way to find out what ECU is on there ? I’ll look into it for sure.

Also, the car was owned by a young girl for the last 7 years, she put 70k on it, it has 120k she said all the maintenance was done regularly at a Honda dealership and I can’t imagine her driving it hard. She didn’t even know what engine it had..lol

The ecu is on the upper right side of the passenger footwell under the carpet. It has an id tag. Will look like this...
