Hi, i just bought a 1999 GSR today and when i was driving it home the engine check light came on and stay on. When i got home i turn off the car and turn it back on, and the light turn off, but when i drive it for like 5 minutes it turns back on. Also whenever the engine light turns on, the rpm will not go pass 6500 rpm, it just stays there and if i don't let go of the gas its like redline at 65000 rpm. It will not go pass 6500 rpm at any gear when the engine light turns on and when the engine light is not on, it will be fine and goes up to 8200 rpm b4 the rev limiter kick in. Anyone know what the problem is?
Thanks
Thanks
to clear the check engine light, reach under the dash on the driver side lower right corner and push a 'secret' button. as far as the rpm problem, maybe bad crank sensor? but i wouldnt know how to tell cuz the crank sensor would be built into the distributer...
I think you are confused with the Maintenance Needed indicator light. This is under the driver's side dash.
AiKwuJiTong check out the below thread which tells you how to check and get the codes from the ECU. Once you've got that code tell us and we can help you get started fixing it.

Its sounds like an O2 sensor. see what happens is the O2 sensor reads how much fuel is still left in the exhaust and it sends the message back to the ECU and it either leans ur fuel out or makes it richer. When your in VTEC more fuel is a major factor. The light will not come on until the car gets to a certain tempature because the O2 sensor is not functional until a certain engine tempature thats why it doesnt come on until you go down the road. U may be able to do a self check of the ECU. I would get a repare manual for that car and it will tell you how to extract trouble codes from the ECU and that code will tell you exactly what is wrong but my guess is and O2 sensor.... I hope my info will help you.... Good luck!
