Default electrical problem?

for some reason when i turn my headlights on, my head unit will lose power, and then come right back on. also happens when i use the button to make my window go down.

now, this doesn't happen all the time so i don't really know where to start. this only started recently. i also checked all the connections on the head unit and they're fine.

so once again, the problem here is that when i turn my headlights on, or roll down my window with the button, the head unit's power cuts out, as if it's being interrupted by something, then comes back on. but yet, it doesn't happen consistently..

any ideas?

Now if your head unit is off does anything else have issues? You could always take the 12V connection from the radio and go straight the the 12V on the ign harness or go directly to the battery... Quite an odd issue that I have never heard of. This is an after market radio right? Did it happen with the stock one?

yeah it's after market. i never really had the stock one, i switched it right when i got the car. but this didn't always happen, i know that much. it just recently started.

and the head unit doesn't actually stay off, it just flickers off for a second and comes back on. its so weird.

maybe its relay related?

Relays are so simple that they don't tend to really go bad... I would go through and check all your connections with the deck and look into tapping your 12v constant power somewhere else... I had issues with a deck before in a customers car. Older GM of course and anytime the deck was over VOL. 22 of 40 it would shut off. Total voltage drop. The factory radio never did this. But it was when the SUB was on/off... Ended up taking the 12v to the Ign harness and worked perfect... They also had issues with the radio cutting out when turning on the AC or anything that pulled a lot of current... Just my .02 cents...

if all your connections are fine for the window, radio, and headlight circuit check the wires you might have had a short or something that is causing the wires to touch re-routing power when you use one of your switches.. if you cant trace the wires use the wiring diagrams to see where those wires might cross up...

yea these are all good suggestions. i do have a system that probably draws a lot of power. and i guess using something else that draws power could just be causing a voltage drop.

could it be alternator/battery related in that case? if something like a voltage drop is happening?
