I had my local performance shop install a newer B18B, New factory motor mounts, new timing belt, new seals, water pump, and oil pump for $1,700. was that a good deal or did I get raped?

Sounds about right for a shop. Most shops around here charge about 1k+ for a swap.

i say get some knowledgeable friends together and do it yourself. pay them if you have to, it will save you money in the end because you'll learn alot... and its always rewarding knowing that you've put your own sweat, blood and tears into your car. DIY and you'll know exactly whats been replaced, and with what. make sure you have an engine hoist and all the right tools though too -- and an impact hammer/air gun.
Shop price is around 500-600. I see you're in san diego. Should hit up loi from http://www.sportcarmotion.com. They're in san marcos. Cool guys, and do clean work.
