I dont understand my overheating problem. It only happens occasionally.
My temp needle will rise past halfway and climb its way up slowly at idle ONLY after i have a semi-hard run.....for example, if I downshift on the freeway to pass someone, then come to a stop after.
I also have to add a small amount of coolant every other week....and sometimes my resoviour bottle is almost full to the top after driving.
What I have tried:
-I have tried draining air out of system
-Swapping out thermostat
-Changed hoses
-Made sure fans worked properly
-Created a manual fan switch.
-No sign of leaks in my garage but I am sure there is one somewhere.......
I have a 94 GSR with a drag 3 turbo. I need to fix this before I tune my car. THanks for the time and help.

So i can understand better, when u leave your car idling, will the needle go all the way to hot? has it gotten that far or do you just turn the car off before it gets there? I was also thinking bubbles in the system because that will defintly cause the problem you described.
Has this just happened recently? of ever since you installed your turbo?
Are you running stock fans? are you running both of them? did you take the AC fan out to fit turbo?
Ive heard some people jacking their car up from the front to let bubbles escape... it sounds silly but who know could work for you.

I drain the air out ....but it keeps building up sometimes.
This started about a month ago.
Stock fans and both of them
Ac still in

Check to see if your oil has water. Check the radiator fluid if it has oil in it. Are you loosing radiator fluid? Like having to fill it up because the water keeps disaprearing? Do you have a bit of white smoke comming from your exhaust?
I think im going to guess that if any these are your problem you might have a bad head gasket. Some reason causing air bubles in your system...causing you to overheat.
Definitly get a compresion test.....

yea ill check compression tommorow morning. How can I see if water is in oil? it just floats to the top? is it easy to see? Do I need to drain my coolant tocheck for oil? because its a pain to take off the turbo to drain the coolant from the sleeves.

Water in the oil- when you change your oil it may show up in the pan of the oil.
Check the dips stick closly for sign of water and oil mixing....

cool thanks a lot
someone suggested to me that it might be my radiator cap since sometimes my overflow tank seems "overflowed" to the top. Opinions on this?

You may have a cracked sleeve and/or blown gasket. Do a compression and leak down test . I can get you thicker turbo gaskets, rods pistons and sleeves.

ok well i just did compression test
1 - 210
2 - 200
3 - 210
4 - 210
so that rules out headgasket....ne ideas

No, your compression can be 100% normal, and you can still have a head gasket problem. You won't see compression problems until the head gasket is REALLY bad. As an example my buddies 2002 Spec V has a bad head gasket (sometimes you can see the coolant in the cylinders) and the compression tests out just fine...

Might also wana try a leak down test.
I'm having a similar prob on my 90 teg...but the temp gauge never goes past half. The lower rad hose doesn't heat up at all, but the top one does. I've changed the thermostat twice with oem parts, and flushed the system twice. I've also taken the radiator out to make sure it wasn't clogged. After driving, my resevoir is mostly filled up to the top, but I don't lose any coolant.
I'm thinking it could be a problem with the water pump. Is there a possibility for the pump blade to shear off, and not be turned by the pulley that is driven by the timing belt?
