Compression Test #'s
Im interested in buying a 98' GSR motor w/ 63k miles. The seller told me the compression test gave back these numbers.
cyl#1 190
cyl#2 193
cyl#3 198
cyl#4 191
Should i be worried about these numbers??
TIA

with lower compression numbers that means that either the seals are going such as..piston rings or valve seals...or B) compression test was done wrong and he didnt open the throttle all the way like your supposed to when doing a compression test. was the motor boosted at one point? or perhaps was spraying on the motor? if so what size shot/how many lbs of boost and for how many miles. just my .02 cents

he did one, and also a visual examination of the head. i started this thread cuz those numbers seem kinda low.

My haynes manual says 270 is normal for a GSR motor. You are allowed 28 psi of variation between cylinders but you want them to be as close as possible to each-other. Minimum psi allowable is 135
The above numbers I posted were after a hydrolock too, I got very lucky

You have to also keep in mind, that some compression testers just have different readings. Thats the long and short of it. Thats why the try to stay away from, oh this number is good, and this is bad, is because people get different readings based on equipement. (Assuming the test is done correctly.) TYPICALLY as long as your within +/-10psi, your fine.

Gotta get the Helms factory manual
The Haynes and Chilton are good for newbies. There are a lot of good troubleshooting and maintenance procedure sections that are explained more thoroughly than the Helms. I have all three.
