Default Code reader problem

I have a problem pulling a code, everytime I use the code reader it gives me an error. I've tried two different code readers, follwed the manual and it still gives me an error sign. The engine light is on but my car still rund perfect. Any help or suggestions welcome.

hook up the code scanner with the car's ignition on, it will tell you its linking, then it may tell you to turn the key to off position for a few seconds then turn the key to the ignition position only, don't crank it over. or read the manual to the code scanner, some scanners operate diffently.

Yeah, I've done all those and I followed the instructions carefully and still an error sign.

Why don't you jump it with a paper clip and read the codes off the CEL instead?
