Default CEL and VTEC

There was a post in the past month about what will cause vtec not to engage. The list was pretty extensive, oil pressure, temperature, and a few more. I can't remember if the CEL being on will disable vtec? i thought that was one of them but i can't remember, i'll continue my search but if someone could help i would appreciate the enlightenment.

EDIT: car is a 96 gsr, if it matters. Don't think it does tho.

a check engine light will not always cause vtec not to engage.....you can throw codes all day and still hit vtec....depending on what the issues are

i do have a cel, i haven't checked it yet i'm going to autozone tomorrow. I just seafoamed and replace spark plugs. I'm guessing it's going to be a fowled O2 sensor or i burnt it up. Seemed to be the most common problems after seafoam. thanks for the help. Everything else listed is operating within limits. I don't know if the O2 sensor would make vtec not engage, but it's a gsr and hard to tell when it does. I thought it might have today but the only thing i can tell for sure is the secondaries opening and i know that really has nothing to do with the operation of vtec

so you don't know if the vtec is engaging or not? might be all in your head, and the cel could be completely unrelated....as i believe it is

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by GRAF-FITI &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">so you don't know if the vtec is engaging or not? might be all in your head, and the cel could be completely unrelated....as i believe it is</TD></TR></TABLE>

Pretty much what i figured. So the answer is that having the CEL on does not always disable VTEC there are only certain codes that will? correct?

There are soft cels and hard cels so to speak, soft CELs are dumb emissions related CELs which wont cause vtec to not operate. Then there are others, such as injector misfire, bad crank position sensor, mis-fires, and anything related to the vtec system that will indeed kill off vtec.....however for the most part they wont effect operation.
