Default Cams

Ok I remember reading about an article with cams. What i want to know is: Do I have to upgrade both cams or will one be good. I would like to know what cam to upgrade as well. I was reading about people only installing one cam and tuneing for pretty much the same gains.

Mods listed below.

You should upgrade both cams. Some people get one cam at a time because the can't afford both at the time. Honestly I think you should get rid of those AEM cam gears because they only have a three bolt pattern(risk of slip), and pick up some Skunk2's.

Ok so what cam would give me the most performance if I were to buy one?

what kind of performance numbers are you looking for? what's your budget? what kind of driving do you mostly do? there's lots of things to consider.

Well I was considering Jun3 stage 2's for a daily driven car. I'm not really on a budget but I dont really want to spend over $1k. Think my GF would get upset and jealous if I did.

if that's what you're intending to get, i'd get both cams. don't overlook valvetrain upgrades as well.

How much would a valve train upgrade be? and is it absolutely necessary? Is this pretty much a standard upgrade for Jun3 stage 2's? Also is a valve train upgrade that difficult? Or can someone with the knowledge of swaping out cams do it?

I would like to keep my idle pretty much the same as stock while adding performance.

yeah, don't overlook the retainers and springs or you WILL regret it. with installation, you are definatly looking at more than $1k (cams, retainers, and springs installed). You might want to go ahead with the more agressive stage 3's since from a daily driven standpoint i belive the primary lobes are identical on the stage 2 and 3. from a performance standpoint... the stage 3 is obviously going to yield a greater gain. as for cam gears, I run AEM and always have... always will... when properly installed they are no less effective or "safe"

hmm. Since I'm going to need to replace all that I might as well get the head port and polished. Then maybe some new rods and pistons for more compression. This battle is endless.

endless but well worth the effort. go with toda spec Bs with their valvetrain upgrade and cam gears.

does anyone know where I can find a comparison chart of cams? I would like to see the dyno runs of different types of cams and what their characteristics are.

You might want to also look at crower cams and valvetrain. They are cheap (relatively) and are still a good product.

If you are looking to spend under $1k you selection is extremely limited, and even more if you are going to have to pay someone else to install them. Judging by the $1G you'll get by well w/ the CTR or ITR cams plus any installation fees. If you go bigger (ie. toda A/B Jun2/3 Skunk2 2) an upgraded valve train will be HIGHLY recommended. You may get by using Skunk2 stage 1 or Toda A's w/ stock valve springs, but your redline will be lowered from stock. I'd ultimately recommend from my experience w/ the Toda B's, for you to go w/ the Toda A's and upgrade to type r valve springs.

Exactly, but then once you've done that you are obviously want to get the most out of what you have so then you'll need to increase your compression, hence pistons and headgasket at least, which will set you back another $500 at least. If you want a nice setup for not too much money I'd go with either ITR/CTR cams and go from there. They can be had for around $350-500 for both cams.

Ya I was thinking something a little more then the CTR or ITR cams. I'm pretty sure I can do the installation myself. I have been reading up and it dosen't look that complicated. What I want to know is how hard on a 1 to 10 scale do you guys think this type of installation is? I have a pretty good knowledge of how all the timing and everything works so I'm wondering if its doable. I might just pull the entire head and send it out for a port and polish while I'm in there just for the heck of it. I will see.

From your guys experience I would like to know what cams can I get the most reliable HP out of and still have a nice idle. I dont want to sound like a v8 integra. Want it to be sleeper style.

As for money I only want to spend less than 1k on the cams themself. This is not including the valve train. I'm going to price around and see what I can come up with. I know a few people around here so I can probably get a sweet deal if I work it a little.
