There isn't a lot you can do after its fully charged. Having too much or too little will cause it to not blow as cold. AC systems have a direct pressure to temperature ratio. When its really hot outside its not going to blow really cold. Whatever you do DON'T go buy a can that says ice cold with stop leak.

In school we still had an R12 system. Most people convert because of the cost of R12 though.

The way you convert r12 to r134 is just changing the valve core. I would strongly suggest taking it somewhere to get this done, because the pressures in a a.c system are pretty exact. But one thing you could do to help improve your system is to replace the filter once your system is evacuated. A clean filter and will allow the freon to flow better and more efficiently. Main reason I say take it somewhere is because the system will be checked for leaks under vacuum.

Not only checked for leaks, but also the correct type and amount of oil put into the system.

I had to have my A/C discharged/recharged awhile back so that I could replace my heater core, and I paid a shop $160 to do it. $80 to have them discharge the system and pull a vacuum on it, then another $80 a few days later to recharge it back using the readings they got when discharging it.
