a/c compressor question
well i found the culprit for my screeching noise on cold morning starts...saturday it was freezing out,so when i started my car it screeched like hell, popped the hood and gave a real good listen...my problem is from the a/c compressor pulley/bearing...but when the weather warms up i dont have this screeching noise when i start the car..my question(s) are:
1..how hard is it to remove the a/c belt so i wont have this problem in the winter and just put the belt back on for the summer months to use the a/c..
2.. its obvious that if i removed the belt the bearing/pulley may seize completely do to it just sitting dormant without the belt turning it,is there a way to grease up the bearing if i take of the compressor,or will the compressor have to be replaced?
3.. what if i just cut the belt off for now and have a new one installed when the summer gets here..by just taking off that belt will it throw the tension of the ,p/s belt off or alternator belt tension off..
thanks a million for any relplies helping this matter..

1. Its not very hard to take off the belt.
2. I SINCERELY doubt that it'll sieze by just sitting there dormant.
3. No, it won't throw off the tension of the p/s or alternator belts, however, you WILL have to remove the p/s belt temporarily when you're taking off the a/c belt.
HTH

thanks for your reply..
one other question,if i just cut the belt off for now (i need a timing belt ,waterpump, acc. belts changed anyway before summer) how hard is it to removed the compressor, will the a/c lines leak freon etc..or is it just a unbolt the compressor andv remove it situation?...thanks again..

You should have the system dis-charged before taking the compressor off. Or else it will leave refrigerant everywhere. And you don't want that. One because it is illegal and the EPA doesn't like it, and 2 it will make a mess. lol
Anyways, it's not tough to take the compressor off after that. I am pretty sure it's about 4 bolts that hold it onto the lower front motor mount there.

Yeah, its four 10mm bolts, however the compressor's still hooked up to the a/c lines, so just cut the belt and leave it mounted. Thats what i did and i've got plans to SOMEDAY get my a/c recharged.
