Broken VSS...

Will this still work?
It's kind of hard to tell whats going on exactly, but basically this VSS is broken right at the point where it goes into the crank case the shaft that spins with the gear is still sturdy and in tact, with this VSS still work? will it be safe to use?
i wouldn't chance using that. when my vss went out, i checked everything, everything was straight, wiring, connectors, physical apperance... but i switched it out with my buddy's vss, and it was straight.
don't bother going to the dealership for a brand new one. just wait around and search online. i found a local guy that sold me his vss for $40. saved $160 compared to brand new.

Well, its a cable VSS, which are hard to come by..
This is actually one a buddy gave me for free, he says he has a few more laying around but has to search for them, i need it by the end of the month b/c i have to get my car inspected.

I'm having trouble figuring out what exaclty that pic is of. 90-93 tegs have the VSS in the cluster, behind the speedo. The cable that spins the VSS and speedo runs through the firewall and then down to the tranny (back side, below the intake).
So if the cable is broken/comes out of the tranny (which has happened to me), usually both the speedo and VSS don't work. If it pulls out of the back of the speedo a little, sometimes the speedo will work (may bounce), and the VSS won't work. Or your VSS can just seize up (that's happened to me before and is happening again).
If it is indeed your cable, it isn't that hard, or expensive, to replace. Last time I did mine, took less then 20 mins, if that. I don't remember what I paid, though it'd be a decent amount less anyway since I work there
So yah, if that pic is of the cable itself, and it's fraying/kinked/etc, just replace it, and you'll be good to go.
