Default is it a bad alternator?

My car will occasionally stalls on me when stopping for stop signs or lights (once a while). But if I turn on the headlights...It will definitely stalls. I also hear some strange whining noise under the hood when the motor is loaded and as the motor revs up, the tone follows. Almost sounds like a supercharge whining up?!

First come to my mind is the alternator, but it still recharge the battery... or could it still be the alternator? I use a autometer Volt meter to try to see if my voltage is low...I got 13.8. One strange thing is when I hold rev it up to 1500rpm and hold it steady it will drop about 300rpm or so and wont bounce back up. Is this normal?

here is how to tell. While the car is running disconnect the negative battery cable and if it can still run off of your alternator then your car is fine other than that I dunno?

just a guess it could also be somthin with your distributor due to the whining sound thoes are the only two things that I can think of that would wine like that other than your radio.

The whining sound makes it sound like a belt man... check your tension on the alternator belt. If it's good, check the rest of the belts also. Have someone rev the car while your under the hood to get a little better feel of what direction the sound is coming from....
When all else fails... call on a good mechanic... I've spent far too much of my own time troubleshooting something they can find in 10minutes. Lots of times they wont even charge you to get an estamite and tell you whats wrong... then you go home and fix it! Good luck man...
