Default another ls/vtec question

I am doing a ls/vtec in my 96 integra ls, and I did some research and decided to use a gsr head or type r head
most likely a gsr head its cheaper, but a couple of other posts and people said its better to use a b16 head, why is that, cant seem to find out why, I thought a gsr head will work better and its better in the torque area 2 right.

Someone correct me if I am wrong but isnt torque made in the bottom end? 1.6 vs. 1.8 vs. 2.2 etc etc?

yes get either the B16 or the ITR head, unless you are going with a diff intake manifold i wouldnt wanna bother with that restrctive one that comes with the GSR

Definitely get the B16 head or the ITR head. They are both made from the same cast and they swap parts better than 2 cousins from Alabama. But no, really...The B16 head costs less than a GSR head and with a P&P job paid partly by the money you save going with the B16 head, you'll be way better off than with the GSR head. Just so many more options going with the B16 head...you won't be disappointed.

Oh and yes, TQ is made down low...which you will have tons of when using the LS block.

bigger displacement usually means more torque

GSR has smaller combustion chambers = higher compression (by around .2:1 increase)

B16/ITR flows better but has larger combustion chamber equaling less compression.

GSR does not flow as well as a B16 head, but nothing that cant be fixed with a good valve job and soild port polish by an experienced porter, many of which happen to be on this board.

Ithink you should see them side by side and you will notice that
the gsr has a greater combustion chamber than b16
a little P&P will make a diff. and you get a skunk 2 mani...

just wondering, if I did still get a gsr head and changed the intake manifold would it then be better then using a b16,

now if I use a b16 what kind of b16 would I use not to sure, cant tell the difference or someone set me straight

sorry me a newbie

You really have to decide how much money you're willing to fork out for the head. If you want the best bang for the buck, get the B16 head because of the better flow. But on the other hand if you're willing to put out some money on the GSR head and get it ported, in my opinion, will be better than the ITR and B16 head. I have a GSR head on my motor and it performs very well. As some of the other members stated that it produces higher compression, it's a good thing if you're planning to go all motor. My head is fully built so the performance is very differenct from stock. It's really up to you. Good luck though.

Cheers

Don't worry, good questions here...I am using a 94 GSR (p72) head due to the lowest cost when I was shopping. The GSR head raises compression aprox. .25 points due to the lower combustion bowl volume. 1st gen B16 heads (PR3) have cast oil galleys (bars that flow oil across the head and bolt on top of cam caps) while later gens (p30) and GSRs have machined ones for improved flow. Although interchangable, GSR cams have a bit more lift on the vtec lobes and P30's have a tad more duration on the same lobe. No it doens't matter at all what you use. You will get the same result regardless. In reality get what is most affordable to you, there are numerous post on here about what head is better, (most of the time people vote for whatever head they are running to be superior because it's theirs) and someone actully has a flow chart for the 2 and its so close that it doesnt matter. Type r heads and B16s come form the same mold, just ITR's are pampered from the factory (hand port and polished, better intake springs, dual exhaust springs, lighter intake valves, stronger lost motion assemblies.....). If you can modify a GSR or B16 to match or better a Type R for the price then don't bother with the ITR.

I believe on a midly modified LSVTEC engine, anything other than the stock B16 manifold is over kill. If you play with the cams and add better pistons (almost mandatory) than an ITR port matched to the head. I'd stay away from most aftermarket IM's unless you need a Skunk2 for the p72, money better spent elsewhere where it will make a difference.
I'd like to know how your build comes together, keep us posted....hope this helps

b16 outflows the gsr, but the gsr will yield a higher compression so stock vs stock results should be similar. I personally have never liek the design of the gsr manifold, so I opted fo rthe b16 head when i built my b20 vtec. It was cheaper, easy to find, and compatible with ITr manifold ect...

Heres a dyno from Alaniz, See for yourself

GSR heads make more power go to http://www.importreview.com there is a dyno chart comparing b16 and gsr heads and you will see im running a stock gsr head with stock airbox on a b18a block w/ b16 pistons and i ran a 13.3 with a computer box of course and my friend with a b20-v with b16 ran 13.3 also not to mention i have a si chassis and he has a cx now you tell me what head makes more power?
