advance timing
so what's the pro's and con's on advance timing... i was thinking of doing it but wasn't really sure if i should go for it... doesn't matter which motor non-vtec or v-tec i just want to get your .02 cents
Based on several sets of dyno charts I've seen, advancing the timing will increase power throughout the power band, but it will also cause you to peak out a bit sooner, depening upon a few factors. Peak numbers can sometimes suffer, however the more powerful torque curve will easily make up for it in most circumstances. I suggest you have timing set on a dyno.
kendall pretty much summed it up. it wont hurt to play around with it as long as you keep it within reason (~2degrees), but a dyno will let you know what is exactly going on and what degree works best for your setup.
the negative is if you advance too much you can start pinging/detonating.

Don't you guys think taking your car(and a car thats probably pretty stock) to a dyno to get your timing done is a bit extreme? I know I wouldn't pay $50 for a gain of 1/3 hp.

I agree, i wouldnt go that far unless i had more engine work done.
