Default ABS pump

Currently trying to figure out if this is normal on a 96 GSR, but this should be common to any (most?) 3rd gen Integras.

The ABS pump seems to always (95% of the time) come on briefly for about one second right after the engine is started, I've noticed this happens if I left the car for a few hours or only a few minutes.

The manual is somewhat ambiguous as to wether this should happen or not.

Could you guys with ABS equipped vehicles please check this out and post? (by the way you will likely have to turn off the radio and buckle up first so there are no other noise to mask the pump noise)

As a side note, the pump does not appear to come on too often while the car is running.

Thanks

Actually, the ABS wake-up logic is outlined quite well in my '98 FSM in the ABS section. The system is initialized after speed of 5mph (I think it's forward speed, too, not sure) is reached after initial startup. ABS is depressurized every time the ignition is turned off, so it'll happen every time the car is started. Sounds like "vmmmbrrrmm", lasts about 2 seconds. The system can also be heard repressurizing immediately after ABS has been used for a bit - i.e. extreme situations like autox/track/testing. If system is repressurizing continually without ABS being used, that's indicative of a problem.

Great info jes98gsr, I guess maybe my 96 FSM is not as clear, or I just missed it, especially the part of ABS depressurize after ignition shut-off, then the repressurizing aspect at engine start up is obviously quite normal.

Thanks again.

Actually the ABS units are different between the '94-'97 and '98-'01 Integras. The '94-'97 models have a larger ABS unit which contains a fluid reservior and accumulation chamber which is pressurized. The '98-'01 models do not have the fluid resevior and accumulation chamber, which makes it smaller and therefore lighter in weight.

I do know that the '94-'97 models do check the pressure in the ABS system when the car is started. If the pressure is low it will pressurize the system (this is the noise that you are hearing). If the pressure is not low the system does not need to be pressurized (then you will not hear anything). Now the ABS system ('94-'97) should be bleed periodically to purge any air that may be trapped in the system. I just bleed my brake fluid and the ABS unit this weekend. Now when I start my car I do not hear the ABS system pressurize. So I would recommend bleeding the ABS system on the '94-'97 model yearly to remove any air which may be in the system. One word of caution, the ABS system is under very high pressure. Therefore, you need to follow the instructions in the Helms manual when bleeding the ABS system. If you do not follow the directions, ABS fluid can be sprayed on you and your car (if you cannot tell...I have had this happen before).

Good info again.

Since I am now down to flushing out brake system and PS fluid on my list of maintenance items, this would be a good opportunity to see if I can get rid of this "problem"
