im gonna go nuts can someone pleease help me. my car keeps over heating, but for the most part only when i am stopped/idling or in slow traffic.
p.s. trust me i've been searching all day.
brand new ls vtec motor in a 92 gsr. there are no leaks, i am not losing any coolent at all. radiator is fairly new and has been flushed recently. when filled it i bled the system correctly so i dont think there is a problem with flow at least from an air lock or something. i also bought a new oem thermostat when i did the swap so there shouldnt be a problem there...
so far i've replaced the thermostat switch? (sensor that goes into thermo housing) and the water temp sensor (one that goes into the head).
i know that both of my fans (radiator/ac) are hooked up and seem to be working because when i turn on the ac both fans come on. i also jumped the plug at the themostat sensor plug, turned the car to accesories and both fans came on w/o having to have the ac on.
the weird part of all of this is that when i turn off the car the the fan comes on to cool things and usually just stays on for about 10 minutes after shut off. if i turn the keys to accesories, it shuts the fans off, and as soon as i take it back off accesories, the fan turns on again.
what is going on here??? any suggestions are greattttly appreciated

no should the fan come on when the car reaches operating temp? i didn't know but yea i've let it sit and idle for ever even after beating on it and i've never seen the fan comes on, and then it starts to slowly overheat. any more info on that relay? where is it at and how do i test it?
If I'm not mistaken, and I don't think that I am, the coolant temp sensor tells the relay to turn on and off the fan(s) to keep you within a specific operating temp range.
I'd check the relay first.

Never owned a 92, nor do I know the location or exact configuration of the relay or wiring. Do a search for fan relay for your car.

didnt figure it out yet, but just wanted to say i don't really think it is the headgasket or at least really hope not. i wouldn't see how it could be bad when it was a brand new oem headgasket and has less than 60 mi on it. also my oil looks like oil and i dont see any coolent on the stick when i pull it.

ya i know. luckily its cool here in seattle for now. but if it was in warmer weather i would definately be having some serious overheating problems. idk what to do still to get these dang fans to turn on when ther motor is running. it sucks because im getting tuned on friday. i think im just gonna set something up with the fan switch and jump it so the fans will just constantly run while i'm on the dyno.

This has one good answer to your problem. The person that uploaded the diagram and responded is correct. I forgot his username though. Check it out and get it fixed before it causes other problems.

If your fan wasn't working, it would cause you to overheat and a blown headgasket would be the result, not the cause. The smoke was probably steam from your coolant in the combustion chamber, from the blown headgasket.

So it is a blown head gasket? After i took it off the road i actually realized taht the pvc tubing going from my radiator to my engine was leaking right at the seal of the two. I dont know if that had anything to do wit it, but i fixed that up. Now im too scared to drive my car with out knowing the full problem. I dont wanna loose my engine.
And i know its not my fan because i already checked that first and it was working proper.

problem solved...
never guessed it would have been that my brand new oem thermostat would be bad and not be opening all the way...
lol at least they gave me my $ back.
i realized this finally was the problem because the fluid was not circulating too well and also the lower radiator hose was much cooler than it should be at operating temp.
anyways thanks for all the help

I dont see how. Explain. Just because I'd like to have control of my fans?
