Rust Belt Drivers Might Want to Pay Attention to Honda’s CR-V Recall

CR-V recall

Rear sub frames can rust and fail, according to Honda’s latest recall affecting 2007-2011 CR-V models.

Road salt is awful for cars. And apparently it is particularly awful for 2007-2011 CR-V crossovers. According to The Drive, Honda has issued a recall of nearly a half million CR-Vs based on rear subframe corrosion. In total, at least 563,000 CR-V‘s will be recalled. Trim level doesn’t matter, as LX through EX-L are covered by a warranty part that is shared through all trims.

Not all CR-vs are subject, though. In this report, The Drive lists Washington D.C, as one location, along with the following states that have been affected by the recall: CT, DE, IL, IN, IA, KY, ME, MD, MA, ME, MN, MO, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, RI, VT, VA, WV, WI. Road salt and corrosives chemicals used for de-icing used by local municipalities is the main culprit here. Honda, interestingly, had an identical issue for CR-V models in Canada for the same issue, all the way back in 2019. Why so late here? We have more paved roads, and use de-icers less frequently. But with 61 reported complaints now stateside, Honda has issued the recall out of an abundance of caution.

If you’re in the affected area and wondering what the recall entails, the focus is around internal corrosion that could lead to a rear trailing arm falling off. That would very likely result in a crash, with injury or worse. Warning signs for the failure (apart from visual rust) would be minimal. We presume in the failures, that metal fatigue finally snapped mounting locations for trailing arms.

As a remedy, Honda states that once brought in for the recall, Honda technicians would inspect the rear subframe for internal corrosion. If found, they will make an attempt at mitigating any rusting. A bracket may also need to be installed. If that attempt won’t fix the problem, Honda would potentially buy the car back.

Owners are urged to get their car checked out sooner than later, but an official letter from Honda would be mailed to affected owners some time this month.
