NSX Third Generation Confirmed by Acura VP

2022 Acura NSX Type S

Despite the NSX Type S signaling the end of the second-gen NSX, Acura Vice President assures us there will be more to come for the NSX namesake.

It’s no secret that the current generation of the NSX is going out with a bang in the form of the NSX Type S. Honda readily confirmed that the mid-engine hybrid supercar would no longer be produced after the 2022 model year. Unfortunately, this news brought down a lot of enthusiasts of the mid-engine monster. However, the end of this particular NSX doesn’t mean the end of the NSX overall. Let’s not forget that the first generation NSX left us in 2005. It wasn’t until 11 long years later that the second-gen models would become available. So, while we may be looking at a bit of a wait, there is some great news for NSX enthusiasts. Acura officially declared that it will be back. Though, they didn’t say when.

This news comes courtesy of our friends over at The Drive, who got official word from a high-ranking Acura executive. In fact, high ranking almost doesn’t explain the story. The quote came directly from Jon Ikeda, the vice president, and brand officer of Acura. If you need a more reliable source than that, well, we don’t know what to tell you. This is as much “from the horse’s mouth” as something like this could get.

Its return will make another bold statement.

The verbiage of the quote makes it a bit unclear what we should be expecting. When asked about the retirement and potential return of the NSX, this is what he told The Drive:

“If you notice, we make an NSX when there’s something we want to say. The first-gen was gas. Second-gen was a hybrid. There’s gonna be another one,” said Ikeda.

Obviously, the statement Honda and Acura set out to make with the original NSX was that they weren’t to be taken lightly in the engineering department. Co-developing the NSX’s handling characteristics with perhaps the best Formula One driver to ever live, Ayrton Senna, alongside Honda’s meticulous and dedicated engineering team, turned out one of the greatest sports cars of the nineties. Spitting in the face of the likes of Ferrari, the NSX became an instant classic and developed a cult following that continues growing to this day.

Though met with mixed emotion, the second-gen NSX kept up the tradition of its predecessor. Though it had some massive shoes to fill, it hit all of the key points. The second-gen NSX is a supercar with phenomenal performance and a driver-oriented experience that collides with Honda’s reliability and daily usability. Furthermore, it reminds us all that Honda still has the power to keep up with the supercar greats using modern hybrid technology. So, what should we expect with the future NSX?

We suspect that Ikeda is alluding to a future all-electric version of the iconic sports car. While that may scare a lot of enthusiasts, we think it fits the program quite nicely. After all, this name and the cars associated have always been about using state-of-the-art technology and meticulous engineering to craft the perfect driving experience.

We look forward to what the future holds for this next generation. What are your thoughts? Hop over to the Honda-Tech forums and let your opinion be heard. What would you like to see in the next generation of Honda/Acura’s iconic supercar?
