After a 20-year absence Acura announced at Monterey Car Week that the beloved nameplate will return in 2022. Can a Type R be far behind?

They say that Friday the 13th is bad luck, but after today we beg to differ. It was on August 13 that Acura officially announced the return of the Integra. Even though it has not been available here in the U.S. for two decades we still fawn all over it. It was a fantastic car with a sweet engine and even sweeter manual transmission. The Integra helped to launch the Acura brand back in 1986. The cars were loved when new and if anything, are even more loved now. Some examples command serious prices when they come up for sale. And soon we will be able to again buy a brand new one. How cool is that?

“The Integra is back,” said Jon Ikeda Vice President and Acura Brand Officer. “I’m thrilled to say Integra is returning to the Acura lineup with the same fun-to-drive spirit and DNA of the original, fulfilling our commitment to Precision Crafted Performance in every way – design, performance and the overall driving experience.”

Great news, for sure, but it doesn’t offer a ton of detail. More details are expected closer to the 2022 introduction. The car is not expected to be a fully electric vehicle. It will, however, likely have some sort of hybrid powertrain. That is fine as long as it retains the fun to drive character it was always known for.

If they are going to bring the Integra back, we may as well hold out hope that they will also bring out a spicy Type R variant. Perhaps it could be an all-wheel drive powerhouse to further differentiate from the Civic Type R? We can only guess at this point, but it is not beyond the realm of possibilities.

A hybrid Integra Type R that spits out maybe 350 horsepower to all four wheels would be a pretty sweet deal. And Honda/Acura have been known to produce some of the best shifting manual transmissions ever. We can only hope they will grace the new Integra with a manual. All this remains to be seen.

However, it is confirmed that we will see an Integra in 2022 and it will likely be a 2023 model. So, you might want to hold off on any car purchases you were planning until all the details are known. No sense in spending money on a car now, only to sell it next year when the new Integra becomes available.

This is such exciting news not just for Integra enthusiasts but to general gearheads overall. Everyone respected what the original Integra was about. What are your thoughts on today’s news? Do you have any features or specs that you would love to see in the new Integra?  Please share your thoughts with us in the Honda-Tech forums. We will share additional information as soon as it is released.
