L.A. Auto Show 2019: Acura Type S Concept Stuns
Acura’s look at the upcoming TLX Type S has us feeling blue — in a good way.
We’re live at the L.A. Auto Show, bringing you the coolest new Hondas and Acuras on display in the convention center. The first thing that caught our eye was Acura’s handsome Type S concept.
Many manufacturers have attempted to make the pipe dream of a “four-door coupe” a reality. Looking at these photos, we think you’ll agree that, for the first time, someone has nailed it.
The Type S concept originally debuted at Monterey Car Week back in August. However, this is our first time seeing it in person.
According to Acura, the Type S concept hints at the brand’s future styling. Specifically, the Type S concept will heavily influence the second-generation TLX Type S.
The Type S badge has been absent from Acuras for quite a long time. That will change very soon, as Acura intends to release two Type S models within the next two years.
Acura vice president Jon Ikeda stated that “The return of Type S is instrumental in our mission to return Acura to its performance roots.” Could the return of the esteemed Type S badge mean the return of some classic nameplates, too?
As much as we’d like to see a new Legend, Vigor, or Integra, that’s very unlikely. Acura seems pretty married to their current three-letter naming scheme. However, we can get behind just about any performance Acura model the brand wishes to release.
No details have been released about the Type S concept’s power plant, and it’s unlikely that any will be in the future. In all reality, this concept is more than likely just a rolling shell, intended to gauge consumer interest while showing off the brand’s future direction.
What we can tell you is that the concept rolls on a square 21″ wheel setup, with wide 285 series rubber. The color is something special, too. Acura calls it Double Apex Blue Pearl, meant to evoke shades seen on previous Type S models.
The paint features nano pigments, as well as a color-infused clear coat to create a bright, deep finish. We’re hoping to see the production Type S soon, but we’d be happy with just the paint code!
