The Acura NSX is a budget, twin turbo, hybrid, hyper car. Now you can buy one at a 25 percent discount, but should you?

The Acura NSX is the halo car for the brand. It boasts all the latest technology, including a performance hybrid system and an all new twin-turbo V6 engine. Many automotive publications have given the new NSX very high praise. So, why are we seeing brand new NSXs advertised at up to 25 percent off their MSRPs?

Let us first look back. It’s 1991 and the Acura NSX is a huge hit. This first generation NSX is an amazing step forward for the brand. Motor Trend called it “the best sports car ever built.” The driving experience was pure and the engine was a high-revving, naturally-aspirated V6. The author of this article owns a 1991 Acura NSX and says it is one of the best cars he has ever driven. At the time the first NSX was built, Honda was winning in Formula One. They used the NSX to showcase their F1 technology in a road car.

The all aluminum monocoque chassis and mid-mounted 270 horsepower V6 made a powerful statement. The NSX was user-friendly and very reliable. Acura had built a reasonably priced supercar that competed with Ferrari and Porsche. For the same money as the original NSX, you could buy the top level Corvette ZR1. It was also less expensive than a standard Porsche 911 C2. So for $60,000 you got the looks of a Ferrari, the performance of a Porsche, and all for the price of a Corvette.

Fast forward to 2017, the new NSX should be the second coming for an amazing supercar from Acura. The price of entry is $156,000 with highly-optioned cars cresting $200,000. In today’s market, this is competing with the Audi R8, McLaren 570s, Porsche 911 Turbo, and Ferrari California T. So, the new NSX is aiming for a higher market and the current competition at that level is very strong. As a result, the brand is struggling to sell cars at full sticker price. Acura has claimed that NSX buyers are custom ordering their cars. So, the dealers are unable to sell the cars on their lots at full MSRP.

So, either way the market is speaking and Acura dealers are selling brand new NSXs for serious discounts. In the second hand market, cars that don’t sell well new, like the Dodge Viper or Ford GT, tend to hold their value in the long term. In conclusion, if you can afford one, now is the time to buy.
