Default Looking for ABS plastic, anyone help with splitter?

I am looking to find some 1/4" abs plastic to build a front splitter. Does anyone know where I can find some for a good price.
I need a couple pieces at least 65"x16".

If anyone has a good source, please let me know.

Thanks....

go to a sign supply place and get KOMATEX. it is a high density plastic and comes in various mil. it is inexpensive, easy to work with and shape and is very durable. if i can send a pic to someone i can show you how i did it. hope this helps

We bought some 4x8 sheets of ABS and Lexan in a few thicknesses at a local industrial or plastic supply company. Just a few calls using the yellow pages and we found some in a small town. I would think you'd want a local company as this is size and material would be a bitch to ship.

The stuff I used is a type of sign board called Alumalite. The commercial sign guys use it for displays, etc. It is a aluminum composite material. Two thin layers of aluminum skin with a plastic honeycomb in the middle. This stuff is super light, very stiff & very durable. ABS would have broken. Aluminum would have torn. This stuff usually just deforms a bit or the skin gets a little damage. It comes in 4x8 or 5x9 sheets in either 6mm or 8mm. You have to go to a commercial sign supply store to get it.

Sunday went ok. My teammate ended up coming out & driving on Sunday. We finished third. It was a good race but not quite as tight or exciting as Sat!!

Tap Plastics is a store that sells just about anything plastic including fiberglass & carbon fiber sheet. I thought they had them in SoCal too.

out of curiosity, how do you plan to work with it once you get it? as in, shape it to the proper form?

Just use 2 pieces. One for the air dam, and one fore the splitter. maybe even just one piece for the splitter that sits flat, and something else for the air dam. In that case, it would be easy to shape, and cut out!

Great. I am going to look into this as well.

Right now, I am just toying with ideas.

I want something to be strong, but not to strong so it rips off, and not my front bumper! Also, I want it to be cheap because we know the things get distroyed pretty easy! Lastly, I want it to be fairly cheap so it's not so much to replace them!

thanks for posting that killer. i used a KOMATEX, which is a high density plastic sign material. the sides are a 1/4 inch and the front is a 1/2 inch. this is very easy to work with and shape...just use a propane torch heat it up for a second and it does what ever you want it to. this stuff cuts with an X-acto and is very durable. it;s hard to tell but there is also a flat bottom to the nose with a CF splitter on each side. we run the enduros so we had to notch out the front to get a jack under it.

you can get a sheet of this for around $60.00 ( 4X8 ) or you can but it in whatever length you need it. it think the total cost for what i have pictured was around 15-20 bucks. good luck..

OK. So far, the 3 materials we have listed that seem to be fairly cheap are.
ABS (not sure yet)
Alumalite
KOMATEX

Any others that we can think of?

With all the HC people around running airdam/splitter configs, there must be some other ideas!

I'm in the process of fabricating my own too.

I made the spoiler from 1/16" aluminum sheetmetal 5.5" tall and using a notcher cut triangles down one side approx. 1.5" between centers and using a hand punch I put the holes 3" between centers (opposite side of the notches) then bent the bottom 1" 90° (side with the notches) so the final height of the spoiler is 4.5". It may be possible to make the entire spoiler with 1 piece (curves may be tricky) but I used 2 just because of the size of the stock I had available. The notches allow the sheetmetal to be curved around and will be drilled to hold the splitter.

To install I simply started from the center drilling a hole in the urethane bumper then inserting an aluminum poprivet with a small washer on the back (inside) of bumper working my way around towards the wheel wells. Where the two pieces meet in the middle I cut a piece of the same sheetmetal approx. 4" x 5" and popriveted it to the backside pulling the two pieces together while adding strength to the center.

I originally wanted a carbon fiber splitter but may go with a special product made of 3mm plastic sandwiched between two sheets of aluminum (approx 1/32" thick each). Similiar to the Alumalite mentioned above but not as thick and the plastic is neither corrugated or honeycomb, it's just solid and very similiar if not the same material as the material in a nylon locknut. A 4' x 8' sheet of this is about $140, enough to make several, and still half the price of a premade carbon fiber splitter.

I still don't know how far to make the splitter stick out...I'm not trying to achieve the look of an LMP car and not really interested in having to use brackets to hold it up. Talking to a local race shop who has experimented with this before suggested no more than a couple inches. They had a car with a 1,200 lb. spring rate in the front and was bottoming out the front suspension at 100mph or so with a deep splitter...shortened it to about 1.5" and achieved the perfect downforce. I don't plan of being at those speeds too much so I think a 2" depth will be enough and still look good.

As you can see in the pictures I have some trimming to do, I left the extra length at the wheel wells to bend it in and cut. The left side is actually photoshopped flush with the bumper just to see how it will look. The pictures were from the first test fit just to see how low it's going to be. The upper bumper piece is not the one I'm using...I now have one in near mint condition and fits perfectly (the bumper in the above pictures was just hanging on and didn't have any screws/bolts holding it)

The grill will be covered with a stainless steel mesh just like the green Del Sol's in the larger pictures below . Instead of attaching with cable/zip ties I am going to use an edge guard/u-gasket material just like the inserts available from Grill-Tech then fabricate some little clips to screw into the bumper from the inside hopefully achieving perfectly clean lines.

Yes, that is a OEM 94-97 bumper and yes I have a 2001 integra...had to use the older bumper because of the shape of the lower part of the '98+. I still need the headlights and bumper lights to complete the projects. Actually I have a 94-97 right headlight and a right bumper lense...just need the left side now. I know I'm working backwards in putting older stuff on a newer car but it doesn't matter to me as long as it fits good with clean lines. Besides, I wanted to make something myself and not try to be like everyone else who wants the ITR or even lower Realtime lip.

Nice write up speedminded! Looks like it's coming out very nice.

But, that looks like you have put quite a bit of work into it. The 4x8 sheet at 140.00 sounds pretty pricy along with the time it takes to fabricate one when you keep in mind that it's probably going to get destroyed on a regular basis if you are tracking the car!

I think I may try glassing the airdam, and finding out some more info on the Alumalite as far as costs go. If it's to much, I may just try glassing the whole thing. If I make the mold, that may be the cheapest and easiest way to make one!

Wont really know until I try!

I would still like to see what some of the other HC guys are using.

I know Andy Hope is using a CF splitter that he made. Looks pretty nice, but CF is costly!
I think Kiwi or Jeff is using a aluminum and plywood set-up.

Just trying to get some other idea's!

I've used ABS plastic....

I've used aluminum....

But I got tired of screwing with it.
Now I just have John at http://www.roadracegear.com make 'em for me.

They take a lickin' and keep on tickin'.

I have seen those before johng. They are pretty nice, but I have quite a few other things I can spend 325 on right now!
